Well, Vegas is like one of the worst places I've ever been to, but to each their own

All depends on what you went there for. It's alot less frustrating to drive in than NYC, that's for sure.

It's the worst. I can't stand it. If you want a party city, there are much better places, Austin for example.

Well, maybe this is the issue. Seeing it just as a "party city".

Las Vegas has no redeeming qualities, the only one people talk about is it being a place to party. But it's not even that great for that even.

Cities should be made for humans, not cars. You don't need a car in NYC and that's one of the great things about it that make it a proper city, not an endless stream off cookie cutter suburban houses that have no soul.

Yes, if one enjoys walking around on nasty sidewalks littered with gum, urine and feces, and living in apartments and houses over crowded with many other families, then NYC is a great place to live.  And as an added bonus, they will tax you like crazy to live in that cesspool of humanity!  But at least they have museums.

I'm not big on museums, they're fun for a bit but not a major thing for me. I didn't see sidewalks littered with gum, urine and feces but I didn't go into the bad parts. NYC is just a great place to visit. Unfortunately, I couldn't afford to live there.

Most places that are expensive to live in are expensive because they're great and many people want to live there.

Las Vegas just has the worst of humanity all in one.

ummm...again...there's lots to do. If people only want to talk about it being a place to party, they are missing out which is their own problem. I never partied there so couldn't even tell you how good or bad it is.

Most people only know about The Strip in Vegas.  If that's all you have visited, then yes, Vegas is also a cesspool of humanity, albeit a glitzier one.

I visited other parts, too, was not impressed. Kitsch everywhere. But mainly the strip, yes. No idea why people go there. I can party better here in the OC if needed, why drive through the desert for that.

I talk mostly about the general feeling of the city, what you see while walking around. Sure, you may find things to do in Vegas but then you go out and see all the ugliness. And everyone I know goes to Vegas to party or for concerts. If you want to do other things, there are better places for that.

I much prefer the outdoors.  Some of my favorite places were Monument Valley, Bryce Canyon, and Zion Canyon.  I also loved Estes Park in Colorado but the altitude messed with my breathing as I have lung issues.  But it was beautiful.  The Grand Canyon was amazing but WAY too many people were there.  We went to the North Rim and it was beautiful and much less crowded.  We did so many fun activities while there.  One of the best was we went up in a hot air balloon during the Albuquerque Hot Air Balloon Festival.  All of these balloons went up at sunrise and it was spectacular.  The ending - not so much.  We landed in a Home Depot parking lot lol.  I dream of retiring in the southwest but then again I am pretty attached to the ocean here in South Florida.  But we often discuss retiring out west.  I'll probably be working until I am 70 anyway lol.

That is what is great about Death Valley NP, not too many people there (except for maybe Badwater Basin) and the park itself is massive.  There are some areas that are high up (Telescope Peak is around 11,000 ft), but most is not.  The joke about DVNP is people love to go to National Parks, and people that want to get away from people that go to National Parks go to Death Valley.

I'll have to check it out.  I have so many places I want to see.  And so many I want to return to.  One of my favorite times was going down to this little courtyard area at Zion Canyon.  Late in the afternoon the deer would start coming down and there were so many of  them.  I would just sit under the tree and feel the most relaxed I ever felt in my life.  I would like to relive that right now.  This coronavirus mess has me stressed out.  Worried about getting sick.  Worried if I will have a job to go back to.  Thinking about  travel is definitely making me smile.

I know what you mean.  We need to take our minds off this issue at least a little.  The wife an I want to go out to Canyonlands and Arches later this year.

Florida is indeed beautiful, minus the heat and humidity.  I'm not too far from you, near FLL.  Alaska had lots more to offer for us that prefer outdoor life.  Wouldn't want to retire there, but I sure did enjoy living there when I did.  One thing I don't like about Florida is the geography... you can stand in Ernest Hemingway's home in Key West and see all the way to Tallahassee! (Well, not really, but you know what I mean.

I do hate that they closed the beaches down here.  That's a bummer, as we really enjoy the sun and ocean air.  Might drive over today or tomorrow and see just how serious they are about the closure.  Should be pretty safe, since no one is (allegedly) out there, except on boats.

If you like Florida so much, I highly suggest a trip to the Dominican Republic when planes are flying again.  Puerto Plata in particular.  Very beautiful, and the people are super nice.

I live in Lake Worth in Palm Beach County.  I miss the beaches too.  I always drive a little north and go to Juno Beach.  I don't handle heat and humidity well so I go to the beach early in the morning when it is cooler and quiet and I can walk in the waves and relax.  Usually by 9:00 am I am ready to go home. There is a dog beach nearby in Jupiter and sometimes I take Oliver.  I whine and complain about the heat every summer lol. But I LOVE the winters! I have lived down here for 17 years.  The majority of my life I lived in Kentucky but all of my family is gone and I have no desire to visit again.   I haven't been to the DR but I have been to a lot of the islands while on various cruises.  I enjoyed those a lot but happy I didn't go on any cruises recently!

The ability to go anywhere and do anything at any time is very appealing to people especially those not strapped down by relationships. Even for me, who suffers from periodic insomnia, it's great to have things to do at any time (but I'm also a city person), or places to go at any time.

Normally Vegas had no appeal to me in CA (things were open quite late in the Bay Area, plenty of things to do, places to be, things to see, etc.), but having lived in Canada for the last decade where everything closes at 5-8pm on the weekends (with significant closures on Sundays) and 7-9 on the weekdays, Vegas is a godsend.

Like any big city, it has crime, especially downtown. And one of the biggest misunderstandings about American cities, Vegas most of all, is that you can randomly go and be at good parties as a random visitor, or that somehow the streets are supposed to look great and party-like or fun. Sounds naive. It's not like that at all, anywhere. You need to know people, or have connections, or lots of money. Fun times don't look for you, it's vice versa. It's that most of the time when you see people talking up Vegas, they know how it is, so they've got all that figured out already.
