I don't remember the airport. The city is amazing though.

Urbanization is great in general. South Korea didn't turn into a disaster even though it's very urbanized because it has a good system to respond to pandemics.

If by amazing you mean crowded & filthy, I would agree.  Sidewalks are full of gum spots because people have no self respect for their living area, people urinate in public and on subway stairs and platforms.  One of the nastiest cities I have ever lived in.  No public restrooms (because far too many people are filthy animals).  Chicago MIGHT be worse, not sure, I have only briefly been thru there a few times.

As I said weeks ago, S. Korea was way ahead of pretty much EVERY country because of their MERS experience back in 2015.  They learned valuable lessons, and as a society, Koreans are very smart, resourceful people.  They don't let the epidemic/pandemic responses get bogged down by politics.  And it shows in their response to this new virus.

Also, their subways and stations are beautifully clean and safe places to get around with.  With a landmass just slightly larger than the NY metropolitan area, they also have nearly twice the population density, and yet are able to maintain a clean, bustling, safe environment.  1000 times better than NYC, in my opinion.

I agree with you about South Korea, it's a pretty cool place in general. I still loved NYC though.

My point was that urban areas can effectively stop a virus if proper measures are taken but if not, the spread can be much, much faster.

I have another theory about NYC in addition to the subway factor: so many people have roommates due to sky high rents. Probably moreso than any other city (except maybe college towns?) I think the doubling up and so many people sharing small spaces totally adds to the spread.

Kew Gardens is a GREAT example of this.  I know some houses contain people from 12 or more families.

I totally agree.  I hate big cities.  I live in South Florida and you couldn't pay me to go to Miami.  I have had to go for a meeting a work and  I hated every minute of it.  I have no desire to ever see New York.  But the best vacation I ever took was to Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona.  I love the outdoors and nature.  I could see myself retiring out there.  But I do like living near the ocean.  My dream trip is to see Alaska.  But I wouldn't want to live there.  I hate cold weather.

Alaska is only cold from about October thru November.  After that, you can't feel the cold anymore. Or much of anything else, for that matter.

The wife and I road tripped to Death Valley last October.  It was great, very pleasant in DVNP and some really great hikes.  We are planning to do this again to Utah and hit a couple of the parks there.  As to Arizona, that is our retirement plan, we both love it there.

But museums! I spent two weeks in NYC last year and I still haven't seen every museum I wanted to and I haven't even been to a Broadway show (I went to some shows in London the year before so I'm familiar with the experience, but still).

Personally, I'll take Vegas over NYC if I'm going to go to that type of place. I'm not a big concrete jungle fan though which is why I pretty much live in the woods lol. I do enjoy some of what there is to do in NYC - the shows, museums, and other activities, but the city itself is terrible. In Vegas most people always assume you go there to gamble...it was funny the last time we went a few years ago everyone told us "good luck". But people don't realize there's actually alot to do there, not to mention more good shows.

Been to AK twice and still plan to go back for more, lots to do, in many different areas. It also depends on where in AK as far as weather - the southeast has VERY mild climate.

Vegas gets even more depressing once you leave the touristy stuff. I stayed at a friend's place when I went. There's slot machines everywhere and a bunch of the non-touristy casinos just have rows of old people gambling their pensions away. It was very dystopian, in a way.

It's the worst. I can't stand it. If you want a party city, there are much better places, Austin for example.

Austin is the best. I've been lucky enough to have friends who've played during SXSW, so I've had access to cheap crew wristbands. The best thing was spending the day near the water and then going out at night.

It also helped that they also knew the owner of one of the more high-end bars, leading to us spending the evening in the otherwise empty VIP area next to the stage, relaxing on couches listening to Perry Farrell play Jane's Addiction songs while getting free champagne poured into our glasses from their bottles on the stage.

I love Austin.
