  • Data analysts at UChicago say they're concerned that the South may be the next hot spots to be 'hit hard' by the coronavirus in the US
  • This is based on data that they've been looking at on the county level, the latest of which has shown emerging hotspots in areas near Albany, Georgia and New Orleans, Louisiana.
  • Some areas may feel the impact of the virus more severely than others because of factors like limited hospital resources, delayed enforcement of social distancing guidance, and limited healthcare access, especially in more rural areas, according to Marynia Kolak, assistant director for health informatics at the Center for Spatial Data Science at the University of Chicago (CSDS)
  • George Pink, deputy director of the North Carolina Rural Health Research Program, said that hospitals in rural areas, especially those in the South, tend to be strapped for both cash and personnel.
  • A crisis like COVID-19, he said, may lead some residents to seek care in urban settings because they aren't able to get what they need in their own communities. It could also push some already struggling hospitals into bankruptcy.

The sad thing is, as the point about migration in urban centers points out, rural areas are going to be, and have already in some cases, become overwhelmed with the patient load. It will be hundreds of NYC scenarios playing out on a smaller scale. It won't make the headlines, but in per capita terns, devastating.

Last I heard from reading this forum, the virus is just a NYC problem and we can't shut the whole country down for them.

It's sad to see how culturally divided this nation has become. Can you imagine a response to 9 11 that tells New Yorkers "well you made your bed with those tall buildings, you are on your own"?

Pretty sure the top 3 states for Corona virus are not in the south.

As you can tell  my opnion on this situation is somewhat different than those I usually cacus with on this forum. Of course being the only true middle of the road and unbiased poster here it is to be expected.

Going about daily business like nothing is going on is unfathomable.

Well, NYC is a majors tourist destination, it has people visiting from all over the world (because it's awesome), so it likely had many "patients zero". It's also very densely populated and public transit is widely used, definitely contributing to the spread. And then add the inadequate initial response (and even after that, playgrounds were only recently closed, why?) and we have the disaster happening there. But unfortunately, many Southern states haven't been taking this seriously and their mega churches ignoring stay at home orders are not helping. An as mentioned above, their inadequate resources and poor health in general and it's a ticking time bomb

Also, in addition to all the problems mentioned, let's not forget that the South has really been high rates of obesity, which is not going to help at all.

Reported. I live in the south and..  oh wait never mind. 😄

I have never really found anything awesome about NYC.  In fact I take great pains to avoid flying through any of the airports there due to the fact that they are just bad.  It will be interesting to see in this new mentality of physical distancing if we will see a movement toward less urbanization.  Sure cities will always exist, but tightly packed cities are a boon to viruses.

I don't remember the airport. The city is amazing though.

Urbanization is great in general. South Korea didn't turn into a disaster even though it's very urbanized because it has a good system to respond to pandemics.

To each their own.  I have never been enamored by cities.  Much rather enjoy things like national parks, and the great wide open spaces of the US West.

I like them both. National parks are great, too. Suburbs are what I hate though.

Suburbs are great, not nearly as smelly as cities, and all the same amenities.  Regardless, it is a matter of opinion.
