She didn't say anything. I wasn't in the system at all.

I see. Regardless, I think you and my husband would have pretty similar timelines for the card. Will let you know of any progress on his end!

I just called our local SSN Office and the guy on the phone told me that I won't be able to get a temporary SSN, not even to get it for health insurance. Which I think is so weird..

Each office is obviously conducting business in their own way/their own rules. Is there any other office near you? I literally told my office that I know of others who are in the same siuation as me and they are being issued SSN's and I wanted to know why I kept on getting turned down... It seemed as soon as I started saying that + the need for a card for health insurance due to "dire need" they started to listen to what I had to say. I literally called multiple times over many weeks until they agreed to an interview... super frustrating.

If you had applied for a SSN upon arrival to the US none of this should have been an issue.

Many of us were unable to apply for SSN upon arrival because we arrived around/ after March 17th when the SSA offices closed due to COVID-19.

I will do the same! I called the office again today and spoke to the girl who did my interview yesterday and she said she was going to call me by the end of the day to let me know how the processing of my application goes... I thought that was super nice of her as she didn't have to offer to do that.

I would try calling back at another time to speak with another rep. The first time I called, the woman told me that she'd worked there for 10 years and there was no way K1 visas qualified to get a SSN. So I called again another time and got someone who knew about K1 and was able to get me in touch with a manager to get the process started.

I have two more offices close to me, I might call them next week. It confused me since the officer said "no" right away and I have read many times on this forum that a lot of people were able to get a SSN issued. I just hope my EAD gets approved fast so I can start the process soon :)

When you call dont ask for a temporary SSN. You're just enquiring about a new card/number period. I'm not sure there is such thing as a temporary number? I could be wrong.

Same! Chase only needed to see my husband’s passport and proof of address to add him to my checking account. Bank of America only needed his passport and U.K. drivers license to add him to my savings account.

Yes i was so happy when chase did it for us. My husband also has a DL for our country. I am military and even Navy federal refused to add him to my account without a SSN. Some of them are difficult for no reason. So for financial relationship we have the checking/savings and he is an authorized user on my Capital One credit card.

For some you do and also for the bank.

It's in fact illegal to require an SSN for health insurance.

Low-level insurance company employees and corporate HR departments are sometimes unaware of this, and it may require a great deal of patience to get to someone who understands things correctly.

This is one reason why if it all possible, it's a good idea to get an SSN soon after POE (in normal times; SSA offices may not be open for in-person services right now).

Oh wow! Didn't know that and thanks! We are just going to let the process run its normal course until I have my EAD.

I mentioned it previously in the thread, but long story short, we were doing the CR1 route. We sent that application in last June and got DQ on April 8th. But, before COVID-19, Canada had a 4-6 month way from DQ to the Interview being scheduled at the consulate. Now with COVID-19, it will be even longer than that. My husband came down to visit in February for a 5 month visit (Canadians are allowed up to 6 months total a year). He was laid off from work and having trouble finding a job, so a long visit was doable. While he was here, COVID-19 happened and we debated back and forth for weeks over what to do.

Ultimately, we decided that based on our current situation, the AOS process would be better for us. I have a secure job and can support us. If he went back, we likely wouldn't have been able to see each other until he got his CR1 visa, which could mean 6+ months apart. So we abandoned the CR1 visa. It was NOT an easy decision since we were so far into it. But I'm comfortable with our decision.

I haven't update the timeilne yet for the stupid fear of jinxing us in the process. I was waiting for our NOA1 then I'll update with the new dates.

Oh, so, to answer your question, my husband is here on a B2 visa technically and we mailed the AOS off April 21st and they received it April 23rd.

Oh, ok. Thanks for your answer. Then we are in the same boat. Only we progressed through CR-1 Consular processing all the way to the end (interview was in December 2019, but they put him on Admin. processing due to a missing document, it was finished in March 2020 and the Embassy emailed my husband asking for his passport to put visa in it, but by then corona arrived and my husband was stuck in the US). My husband arrived on ESTA in February to visit me for 3 weeks. His returned flight was cancelled in March. We re-booked for a later date. That flight was also cancelled. France went on quarantine and the Embassy in Paris closed. We applied for Satisfactory Departure to prolong his ESTA, and got rejected. So finally (after debating it for several weeks) we were forced to take the AOS route. The AOS package was mailed on 4/24, received in Chicago on 4/28, and since then no news. My husband's ESTA expired on 5/10, and we are a bit nervous....

Sigh. Got my RFIE notice in the mail today. I'm glad I did MY part right and USCIS isn't asking for more info about me..but for my sponsors: my main one and joint sponsor. (Was worried it was about my foreign transcripts not being "evaluated" but since it was in English it seems to be okay?)
for my main sponsor, my husband just didn't include his latest ITR because we kind of submitted it before he filed his taxes but it should be okay now. And the joint sponsor is his dad and I don't think he really knew what he was doing when filling it up and we were kinda rushing him 😅 but here;'s to a smoother ride ahead.
Receipt date: Apr 21st
