We received an RFE to submit applicant's birth certificate and sponsor's most recent tax returns. We just noticed that we put gross income in the form I-864 page 5, where it asks for adjusted gross income.

Shall we send a corrected I-864, or shall we just explain it in the cover letter, or shall we just send what USCIS specifically asked for and ignore this for now?

I would send what you were asked for by USCIS. That is, the sponsor's tax return and the applicants birth certificate.

You may attach a cover letter to explain yourself if you made a mistake, but I would'n send a new I-864. Just follow their directions.

Send what the RFE asks for right now and if you get a interview then you can fix it then.
