The first US coronavirus patients are being treated with convalescent plasma therapy. Will it work? Not even the doctors know

Why a treatment used for over a century on diseases like measles, mumps and influenza could work to treat the new coronavirus strain.
JUST THE FAQS, USA TODAY
In New York and Houston, pints of straw-colored convalescent plasma have dripped into the veins of five U.S. coronavirus patients. Hundreds more there and across the nation are set to follow.

Most anecdotal reports are saying it does help. Kind of like some the other treatments, there is not really time to evaluate them the way they normally would. At least with convalescent plasma therapy,  the mechanism of how it works has been well studied. Historically it has been another treatment that works better when started early in the course of the illness, so the key would be having enough available to start early.

Being that the core therapy has been in use for other viruses for some time, would you expect weeks, months or years for evidence this works?

Cedars Sinai and Mayo are already extracting plasma.
