  As a parallel though, they have brought up a few times how the 1918 Flu virus mutated into a more virulent form and killed way more people in the "second wave". It's hard to find anything conclusive, but anecdotal evidence suggests people who caught it the first time and recovered were either immune or got milder symptoms during the second wave. Kind of makes me wonder if they'll eventually find something similar with how Covid-19 spread. 

Kinda makes sense though.  CA had more traffic from China from the beginning, yet has less cases.  Either people are immune on the west coast, or they got it and didn't know it.

   That's what I was suggesting. Could be there already was a milder first go around and some people are now immune. Or maybe that some of the asymptomatic people are just fighting it off quickly because they already have antibodies. I'm sure we'll find out eventually.

What you're saying is that he can't delegate. He can't assign people to focus on what was happening with the novel coronavirus while also dealing with the impeachment, which ended on February 13th, almost a full month before his decision on flights from China on March 11th.

The impeachment was relevant.  As was the time spent having to deal with it, instead of paying attention to the disease.  As is trying to politicize the disease to try and hurt Trump.  It's all just a big game for some folk.

Maybe the impeachment kept from restricting travel from Europe soon enough.  Who knows?  The blatant politics being played by some from the Dem side is a little disheartening.  There are a few that have been very good, Cuomo, Newsom to name a couple, but the mayor of NY and Whitmer’s actions from my state are just sad.  This is not a political virus, and what we have seen is an unprecedented response not seen at least in my lifetime, where a government has imploded an economy and driven this country into depression territory for the benefit of the people.  There should be a balance though because a depressed economy will also result in people losing their lives.

It would've been cool if Trump hadn't fired the pandemic response team either, so that the federal response would've matched the gravity of the situation. Maybe officials would've been more prepared if the information was actually available on a local level.

 

Not saying that that wasn't a shitty tweet, because it definitely was. It's just super easy to start blaming people when the ones that are actually preparing for this can't get the resources they want from the federal government because they still think it's not that serious. Between Trump's conspiracy theory that healthcare workers are stealing masks and him claiming that NY doesn't actually need that many respirators or sending a navy vessel that's only taken about 20 patients so far, this is a federal problem. Why did it take until the 27th to invoke the DPA?

It's not like he's actually technically invoked it properly. But it's fine I guess if people want to believe he's done it... there's good legal analysis that whatever he's invoked hasn't got much teeth. And I certainly agree with you that he is not helping, and there is a widespread problem with the federal government that is painful to watch every day how bad it is... but we cannot negate the effect of lack of state action too. So far we have many states being pretty tepid in their response. Not only will their own citizens have to pay the brunt of their inaction, but we all will. De Blasio, like others, hasn't been especially helpful and acted too late.
