Concerns about the coronavirus have made leaving the house to go grocery shopping, surrounded by other people, feel downright dangerous. But one can't exist on rice and spaghetti alone. If you're concerned about a shortage of fresh vegetables in your fridge, you might be a prime candidate for the victory garden trend.

Victory gardens first became a thing about a hundred years ago during World War I, when Americans at home, away from the battlefield, were urged to contribute to the cause by growing vegetables in every flowerpot and patch of land available. These victory gardens resurged during World War II, and they're enjoying yet another rebirth today due to the coronavirus pandemic.

According to the New York Times, seed companies are currently inundated with requests, and some are reporting a shipping backlog of close to a month.

All that assumes one has the money, space, and supplies to build such a garden. Of course gardens are a great idea and not just for bad times, but any time. Not everyone also knows what they are doing either..

Nor does location lend itself necessarily well to gardens.  I tried gardens for 2 years with store bought soil meant for gardening in raised beds that I watered.  The only things I could get were lettuce (if you don't mind earwigs) and cherry tomatoes.  The cucumbers and bell peppers really tried but just couldn't.  Same with the strawberries which I assumed grew everywhere! LOL  Even the corn said no. 

But I live up high and planted everything from seed.  So I probably did something wrong.

We have difficult soil here, so I mainly focus on gardening hardy you-animals-better-not-touch-me perennials. The lack of winter has been a disaster though. We've considered building box beds on wheels for container variety veggies as my husband always had good success back home... but of course UK climate is not like here, where it's stinkin' hot in the summer and full of bugs, voles, and mischievous squirrels. I don't like growing veg from seeds, never had a lot of luck, probably just buy starter plants from the Amish neighbors. Sometimes you just get bad seeds.
