The mayor of coronavirus-plagued New Orleans took a shot at Trump, saying the city would have canceled Mardi Gras if the federal government had taken the outbreak seriously

Correct, mostly. But if it did add in filters as per suggestions I'd actually feel fairly confident that my risk of breathing something in would be greatly reduced, provided it was also frequently washed and all other protocols were followed. That's one thing I've been reading about in research papers; exposure to viral load. Those less bothered have less load than those with higher exposure. Oly Fun has disclaimers that its not an FDA tested product for filtration, but it's won over many doctors that are requesting groups to make them. A similar type fabric was developed for use in another hospital. And it makes sense, non woven materials don't have the ability for a germ of it's particular micron size to pass through compared to other woven fabrics. It'll keep your germs in and keep other germs out.

Not according to sub- 1 um testing data.  Study done in England.

Tshirt filtration efficacy is 50-70%, non-woven multilayer combinations are 60-90%.  They’re not N or P rated by any means but I’ll take it.

The value in trapping and containing spread due to asymptomatic transmission is priceless

From industry:

Test data:

Research was from the H1N1 days.

Your attitude puzzles me.  Why go against every single study that has been conducted and why resist (any) form of transmission reduction, much less a relatively easy one.  We’re already under stay at home, do you mind making things safer for the very few times we do have to venture out?

I'm not against their use.  If it makes you feel better to use them, then by all means, do so.  But most people have no idea how to wear and use them properly. Just like gloves, they provide a false sense of security.  I see people in the stores who are wearing them touching items on the shelves, then reaching up to adjust their masks, thereby contaminating the mask. Then they get in their vehicle, take off the mask to get that cooling sensation, and drive to the next store.  Meanwhile, that contaminated mask saying on their console or back seat.

Then they arrive, slip said mask back on, and go about their shopping.  They lack both the knowledge of proper mask wear and the discipline to never touch that mask while wearing it.  And don't even get me started on the people who leave their house wearing gloves, and never take them off until they arrive back home.  All the while handling items in the stores, picking up and putting fruit back, touching items on shelves, etc.

And then there's the fact that I don't own any.  And I'm not going to pay a crazy price to order some, if they can even be found in stock.

Well I have to be annually certified / fit tested for half-face, full-face, and supplied air so I guess we get more training than the average joe or joanne on the street on what constitutes responsible mask use.

Basing what you do on what people around you do is probably one of the most illogical statements I’ve seen here, it sounds like stuff I expect to hear from my kiddos to be honest.

I  don’t really care what they do.  It’s our job to do everything WE can do, and I don’t care if the people around me are shopping while eating boogers while we do it.
