I think there will be a rise in suicides unfortunately.  Right now people have lost their jobs and were living paycheck to paycheck.  I am sure right now many people are wondering how to buy food, pay their rent, keep their utilities on.  People have to stay inside.  Anxiety is everywhere.  And that is just a sad fact of what will happen.

But you can't compare suicide to Covid-19.  Suicide is a choice.  Getting sick with the coronavirus is something that happens to us.  Dying from the coronavirus is something that happens to us.  We get no choice there.  We do however have the choice to take all the precautions we can.  My job offered us  the choice to keep working or take some time off.  I have underlying health conditions so I choose to stay home.  However, my husband works in a hotel and comes in contact with many people.  So is he bringing it home to me?  Maybe.  So we are even social distancing at home as much as possible.

There is a disease element to suicide though, it appears to be socially contagious, particularly with young people. Grief over the suicide of friends and family can lead to more suicide.

With all of the stress on people, the healthcare system cannot let mental health slide, they need to treat the whole person.  How, in these times, is unclear, but it all part of treating the whole person.

Oh I agree with you that there is a disease element to suicide.  I have lost members of my own family to suicide including my younger brother.  And he seemed totally fine right up until the moment he wasn't.  And we have to take care of our mental health.  I found myself getting anxious and depressed today - which I take medication for - and I decided to come to this forum and hang out a bit.

But I still stand by my statement that suicide is a choice.  Maybe at that time they felt like they had no choice which is sad.  But in the end they make the choice to end their lives.

COVID-19 UPDATE (3/31/20): Tennessee coronavirus related deaths jump from 13 to 23 in one day

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Mike Osborne)  -- Tennessee health officials reported a startling jump in the number of COVID-19 related deaths on Tuesday. Twenty-three patients have now died of coronavirus complications, up 10 fatalities in a single day.

Officials said there are now 2,239 confirmed cases of COVID-19 statewide, up 405 cases in one day. There are 175 Tennesseans hospitalized.

The jump in fatalities took place on the same day new virus related restrictions ordered by Gov. Bill Lee went into effect. The governor on Monday ordered all non-essential businesses statewide closed. The new restrictions are intended to slow the spread of the virus.

Gov. Lee did not order Tennesseans to shelter at home as his critics and many health professionals have demanded. Lee told reporters that he has resisted such calls because personal liberty “remains deeply important to me.

Forced social isolation and forced government shutdown of everything isn't really a run of the mill event like getting sick.

Likewise, the persistent gaslighting and destabilizing messages hammered by the media, guaranteed, aren't helping either, for those prone to their messages.

For those who are unstable enough to kill themselves (whether becoming unstable on a whim or being unstable most of their lives and very prone to momentary suicidal lapses), events like these are really all the trigger needed. It's not to say society should walk on eggshells, just understand how the behavior mentioned above (in the prior paragraph) is contributory. One of the best things people can do for those who are vulnerable is get them away from a television, social media, etc. and around other people, safely.

Well sure.  My job is to get rid of inappropriate behaviors and replace them with more socially acceptable behaviors that serve the same purpose of the bad behavior.  Have any bad behaviors you need to get rid of???
