Observations? 48 persons chose to stupidly kill themselves via their free will for whatever reasons are their own.

Meanwhile 1000s are dead and becoming sick every day through no fault of their own of which many will ultimately die a slow and agonizing death as doctors and nurses risk their own lives and the lives of their families to bring them away from that point.

 

My observation is neither of these things are like the other. False equivalencies do not help an argument and the federalist which I once occasionally enjoyed reading has fallen down the hole of outright falsehoods and stupidity. Hopefully one day they'll get their act together before they contribute to killing someone.

  Suicide rates for 2019 were the highest they have been since WWII. The only times they were higher than 2019 in the 20th century were the periods around WWII and the great depression.

 

  So two things showing up here:

 

    -The first is that this is a major crisis and historically, there tends to be a transient increase in suicides whenever that occurs. It pushes people who were already on the brink. That certainly could be happening here, although it's hard to say this early.

 

  -The second is that there were reasons driving suicide rates higher before this occurred. One would be the massive drug epidemic we have in this country, specifically with drugs like opioids,  where abuse does correlate with a higher risk of suicide. Another would be the health care crisis that already exists in this country, both access and cost. The extremely high debt to income ratio we have as a society is another major factor. More people than ever are one setback away from insolvency.  The Covid-19 epidemic has exacerbated existing issues that we have already failed to address.

This is a known outcome in the aftermath of disasters and emergencies unfortunately. Also a rise in domestic violence .. relationships where it was already happening  see it escalating, and relationships that were not marked by DV are at higher risk of it occurring. Multifactored causes identified through research studies .. and very often hidden and not seen even by close friends and family. 😓

Quick OT question. Are you open at all? I don't know if my dentist is. I can imagine rooting around in someones mouth would be risky?  Was pondering what I would do if I get an eruption or something falls out

Have you tried calling your dentist? Mine is only open for a few hours a week and only does emergencies now, so they should see you if it's truly urgent.

     Mine is open for urgent care or emergencies. They said they will reschedule all the routine cleaning and non urgent cases.

 

    I just got an email from my doctor's group too. They have 3 locations where people can go only if they have respiratory symptoms, 2 locations only for non respiratory, and 5 locations are doing online consults only. I think they have the older doctors working from home that way, and they won't see anyone with any Covid-19 symptoms except at the designated locations. Good idea, but would have been better if they started doing that earlier though.
