While waiting for I-751 approval

I am reading many posts here that lead me to believe the I-751 takes awhile to be approved. So am I correct in assuming that 2 year GC will be expired before the 10 year is issued? If so, what is the legal status for working in between the time the 2 year card expires and the 10 year appproval?

After you submit your I-751 application, you will receive an NOA that extends your conditional GC for one year, and you are work and travel authorized during that period.

Usually, the 10-yr. GC arrives prior to the year extension.

You must apply for the 10-yr. GC 3 months before the 2nd anniversary of the 2-yr. GC's expiry date.

Really? Do you have some statistics showing that is true? Ours took 7 months almost to the day. That is the more likely scenario for most service centers now. There have been exceptionally fast approvals, but, from reading others' experiences here, seldom does the 10 year GC arrive before the 2 year expires.
