“Banning public gatherings is an idiotic idea,” said Giesecke, “and if you’re not feeling sick you should go to work or school. There’s no reason why people who feel well should stay at home and there is no evidence that shows closing national borders or restaurants reduces the spread of viruses. The only preventative measure that has sound scientific backing is washing your hands. But we’ve known that for 150 years.”

Sweden isn't the only country that's dealing with the virus very well despite not taking drastic measures, that doesn't mean they don't help, but there are definitely more ways, some of which are not implemented in Europe and the US which instead choose to take the drastic measures alone.

US is not the only country taking these measures. New Zealand , Australia, India just to name a few.

You can't implode an entire economy because a very few amount of people are getting very sick.

Western countries will not keep things shut down for long. It was funny hearing on Canadian radio them trying to give Trump flak about talking of restarting business in a few weeks (not that Trump cares what TDS monetizing public radio people think), but even Trudeau was doing the same thing. Nutty gaslighters.

Sending people back to work doesn't create headlines, nor does it generate revenue for news outlets.  Guess what does?

It didn't work in the UK, it's not working in Sweden.

Are you sure about that? my stats say otherwise. All Scandinavian countries actually seem to be handling this really well, on par with countries like HK, SK, Singapore, Taiwan, etc. and nobody can say they have warm weather...

US isn't even really taking drastic measures everywhere. My point is, it's not enough to just lock things down. We (and Europe) are borrowing that aspect of it, but not others, which isn't good.

The other Nordic countries are not taking Sweden's approach.

People who feel well shed the virus. If they test everyone and they order the positive cases to stay home and the negative ones to go about their day in a careful way, that would be one thing. Not knowing who is infected makes a lockdown necessary.

Our biggest difficulty is that we let it become widespread before we did much of anything. There are more options and probably less aggressive interventions needed if you start with patient zero vs patient 500.

The biggest mistake any given country made in this (IMO), was not taking the possibility of asymptomatic spread into account and reacting accordingly.

More accurate to say letting things get out of control to the point that you have to ban public gatherings is an idiotic idea. Banning public gatherings and shutting down business is a reaction to the failure of the measures that were tried prior to doing that.

It's no different from anything else. You see a tiny puddle under your water heater and you hope that it just evaporates, it's going to take more time, effort and money to fix in the long run.

Agreed. But also, even after you start getting more drastic, you can still use a basket of approaches and not expect to just be lazy and drastic and that will do the work for you.

By tomorrow the US will surpass both Italy and China, in number of confirmed cases.

Surpassing Italy is understandable. Surpassing China.. not believable.
