WASHINGTON, D.C.—Congresspeople from both sides of the aisle assured the nation Friday they're going to try to take advantage of the current crisis in every possible way.

Americans were worried that this crisis was going to hit hard without any push from the government to present itself as the answer to all their problems. But lawmakers reassured Americans that they're working together to look at all the challenges of our current disaster and pull all the right strings so that they come out on top.

"Rest assured, America, we're working day and night to see how we can expand our unconstitutional powers, reduce individual liberty, and personally profit from this crisis," said one Republican senator. "If there's a liberty somewhere we haven't tried to stamp out, don't worry -- we have good people working on it."

"If there's a constitutional right to be trampled on in this -- we're on it," said one Democratic congresswoman. "All our best people are looking into all the ways we can exploit this crisis for our own gain. We have committees working long hours to see what kind of terrible bills we can slip through while the nation is distracted. Anyone who thinks we would let a good crisis like this go to waste is sorely mistaken."

Congress has also assured the nation that as soon as this crisis is over, they'll be looking for another to exploit.

Right on, how can we fool em today.

What I am curious about is what about couples that filed taxes for the first time this year, and are being affected by this whole crisis, and have had reduction in hours.  What kind of relief will they get, no taxes for previous year, but have filed already this year - not like this group of people aren't being affected.

The same question, I started working at the end of January this year ...

Oh good. More money to throw in the stock market

Exactly, I got 20k in last week in hospitality and travel stocks, I've got another 10k loaded today ( I transferred it on Friday), didn't do anything today, waiting for the clowns in the house and Senate to keep stroking everyone off promising to pass this stimulus package, tommorow they don't pass it ( Let's hope) the stock market should bottom out better than before, and it will be time to buy again. Maybe even tomorrow it will plummet enough for me to get into some more. I'm thinking Ross/TJ Maxx stock, as they should make it thru the recession and come back. Wish I could afford Amazon and Walmart stock.

I filed taxes for 2019 but not for 2018. Would you guess I’ll get something too?

This is what Mitch McConnell have said: "The income levels the government will review to make the cash payout determinations will be based on 2018 tax returns" (source: https://news.yahoo.com/see-whos-eligible-coronavirus-checks-000249786.html

and https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/congress/see-who-s-eligible-coronavirus-checks-senate-gop-releases-details-n1164311)

So it seems that if someone did not file taxes in 2018, they will be excluded from the this payout.

Keep this in mind: The Democrats will be putting forward their own bailout plan, which means, if the Democrats bill survives (or replaces McConnell's bill), whatever McConnell wanted or proposed in his bill is moot (as its possible the Democrats "may" expand the pool of qualified citizens  -- the operative word here is "may"). My suggestion: Call your local Democratic congressman/woman and voice your concerns to their office. Be proactive, your inclusion in the bailout may very well depend on your vigilance.

Good for you...why don't you share a little of your wisdom? Just a little, perhaps? After all, this site is all about the collective sharing of thoughts, ideas and knowledge, right?

A good resource is called the motley fool. Google it up. I haven't bought stocks in years, but I couldn't pass up some of the possible returns, of course it could all backfire and everyone is dead in 2 months, but then money won't matter anyway. Can't take it with you. LOL

For example, I set a buy order at 8.00 a share for CCL, Carnival Cruise stocks, I never in my right mind thought it would go that low. It hit 7.90, I ended up with 1000 shares at 8.00 a share, so 8k investment. Closed today at almost 12 a share, Friday it was at 12 a share, that was a quick 4k made, today I'm still up pretty well. It goes back to 50 a share, even 40 a share, I'm paying off my house. Of course it could never recover, but I hope it will.

Funny how in this forum every time a liberal point of view is shown, usually against some executive action or measure, there is an outcry for non partisanship and a rush of conservative members defending the president. But when this kind of incendiary and false statements are done no one complains.

There was several clauses the democrats wanted to include, mostly to guarantee this is not another bail out without consequences for big corporations and that employees and small businesses  are the main focus. But yeah, give all your money to Delta. In a month or two they will say they will still have to lay off most of their employees anyway because it wasn't enough. While gathering money for next year bonuses and stock buy backs when things calm down and profit returns.

While that happens small restaurants in my town, most of them run by immigrants, will be closed in a few weeks and who knows how those families will survive.

Funny how people try to push their own agenda everytime. I am not taking any sides, I am just making sure the other side is also put in front of people. If you dont like it, its your choice but have to put both sides of the topic.

I agree entirely with your assessment. Honestly, I like what the Democrats are trying to do -- put the focus of any bailout on the working people -- first! The airlines, hotels, cruise liners (by the way, most of which has their parent companies registered in foreign countries to avoid paying tax) all want bailout on the backs of us hard working folks. That is just plain wrong!

Ohh, so you're a day trader? Yes, indeed that's a risky game, because based on what I can perceive in the news, cruise lines stocks (I suppose you can lump airlines, hotels, etc.) may rise and fall with the whips of the stimulus package going through the roller-coaster in Congress right now. So if this drags on...or the Democrats are successful in putting forward their own plans (sans any cruise line bailout) -- those stock value will find themselves much, much lower than 7.90. Providing you time the market well enough to get out before (and if) that happens to mitigate any loss you may incur. OK, I think I got the idea. Thanks much mate!
