Republicans gathered for a closed-door caucus lunch when Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) broke the news: One of their own, Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), had tested positive for the coronavirus.

"Colleagues, as everyone now knows, the coronavirus has arrived in the Senate. There are at least five senators who are in self-quarantine at the moment," McConnell said, making a public announcement from the Senate floor.

The first known case of a senator contracting the disease set off a domino effect throughout the chamber as colleagues tried to recall the last time they were in close contact with Paul, who was in the Capitol complex as recently as Sunday.

Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) told reporters on Sunday afternoon that senators would have to weigh whether they would need to self-quarantine. Only hours later, he announced that he would.

"The disclosure sparked two questions: Why was the Senate gym still operating while gyms across the country have shuttered, and why had Paul decided to come to the Capitol even though he was awaiting test results?"

From what I heard the Senate gym was shut. He decided to use it anyway.

Uh huh...... he also is missing part of his lung. But he generally never seems to care, as he's voted against most of the provisions to help anyway. Had he not done what he did yesterday, and other senators hadn't run to quarantine, the bill may have passed. Which makes ya wonder...

Or, perhaps not. And it really is no wonder, IMO.  It's a function of party lines.

Well I hate to be conspiratorial, since I really dislike that behavior myself. But either the man is especially stupid or especially callous towards his fellow senators - the majority of which are all in a high-risk category. He's made it clear how much of a joke he finds everything and that he's against such bills. He voted against and tried to tie up the previous bill which would help the people he represents get much needed testing, but yet ran out and got a test himself and continued to put everyone he encountered at risk. Through his actions, he found some small way to contribute to killing the bill and putting the function of the senate in danger.

The Dems are going to do everything they can to take advantage of this crisis to stay in or gain more political power.  Kind of sad really.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) worked to scupper the phase-three coronavirus relief package on Sunday after Majority Whip James Clyburn (D., S.C.) told caucus members last week that the bill was “a tremendous opportunity to restructure things to fit our vision.”

Clyburn’s comments came on a Thursday call featuring more than 200 House Democrats, during which caucus members laid out a list of provisions they wanted to be included in the Senate’s trillion-dollar package.

Republicans have said that Democrats have reportedly demanded increased bargaining powers for unions, as well as environmental regulations for airlines and more wind and solar tax credits.

But in an extensive statement Monday afternoon, Paul defended his handling of the situation, saying he got tested simply because he and his wife had traveled extensively in recent weeks and he's at higher risk due to having part of his lung removed following an assault.

"I felt that it was highly unlikely that I was positive since I have had no symptoms of the illness, nor have I had contact with anyone who has either tested positive for the virus or been sick," he said.

Paul said he remains "asymptomatic" and said to his critics: “For those who want to criticize me for lack of quarantine, realize that if the rules on testing had been followed to a tee, I would never have been tested and would still be walking around the halls of the Capitol. The current guidelines would not have called for me to get tested nor quarantined.  It was my extra precaution, out of concern for my damaged lung, that led me to get tested.

     Most states have already dropped or are close to dropping travel history as a testing criteria. Makes sense, since the virus is everywhere now.
