But the wife of the man who died has said that they took it because Trump was on TV promoting the drug:

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/coronavirus-news-arizona-man-dies-after-taking-chloroquine-drug-touted-by-trump-as-treatment/

This isn't to say what they did wasn't stupid, but it does possibly say that stupid people aren't able to parse what Trump is saying or trying to say. Right now I'm not paying any attention to what politicians say about the science behind the virus -- I'm only paying attention to scientists, doctors and other qualified medical professionals. I listen to the politicians about policy -- what's being shut down, for how long, etc.

Did you actually read the article or hear anything about it? They saw that it was in their fish tank cleaner and drunk it.

Sounds just like what President Trump said yesterday.  Of course he said it in front of a bunch of activist journalists, so it certainly was reported differently.

Physical health and economic health are two different things. Many people prioritize economic health, but that takes a different perspective when physical health fails.

As I said yesterday, if we fail to mitigate this, then we are rolling the dice for everyone on whether they will be one of the 80% that stays home, or one of the 20% that risks dying. I don't want people to think that is as straight forward as saying you are in a certain age group so you will be OK. Young people will die too. Last week I was more willing to take chances going out. Now I've seen people younger and healthier than myself end up on ventilators.

It wasn't "fish tank cleaner". It was the anti parasitic chloroquine phosphate dosed to treat aquarium fish. It's available at any pet store. It's not a different drug, he died because it was formulated to dissolve rapidly in aqueous solution, and so it overdosed them.

Yeah it cleans the fish tank of any parasites...… He still won the Darwin award unfortunately.

Trust me I understand this because this is seen by many preppers as a easy way to score some antibiotics without a prescription. But you have to be careful when taking them and do your research, not just willy nilly it

Right, but he died of a drug overdose. Same thing that happens if you get the prescription for 2 pills and accidentally take 4. The take home message should still be don't mess around with this class of drugs. I've had spam email from who knows where trying to sell this stuff. It's not aspirin. There is no margin for error.

I know. This is where I first saw it happen too, years ago. I don't want people to think he drank some chemical or something. He did take the actual drug and overdosed. I don't recommend that humans use medicine formulated for animals at all, but certainly you have to know what you are doing if you try it.

I did actually read the article. The wife has said that she recognized the name of the drug when Trump mentioned it as being a potential cure, and she put the tablets in some soda.

People do stupid things. I'm not excusing these people for their stupidity or really blaming Trump at all. I just wanted to point out that this idiot drew a line between what Trump said and her actions, whether or not they were actually justified. That's all. :)

C18H32ClN3O8P2 is chloroquine phosphate, what the idiot in question took.  It is an algaecide and parasite killer.  Self-prescribed by the man and his wife.  Dosage unknown.

C18H28ClN3O5S  is hydroxychloroquine sulfate, and is what was used by doctors to treat the man who was dying from covid-19, and he came back from the brink of death from the virus.

There is a reason why the label on the ich treatment/algaecide for fish advises not to take internally, and what to do if it is ingested.  Same with Preparation H, Windex, Dawn/Palmolive, and every other cleaner known to man.  The algaecide used in diesel fuel tanks has similar warnings, for a reason.

But isn't that EXACTLY what they did?  Drank their koi ich treatment?  I haven't seen anything specific yet as to whether they used the liquid or tablet form, but I suspect that is a moot point.

Chloroquine can apparently just be obtained without an RX in places like Mexico and Nigeria, so that's led to hoarding, a pharmacist apparently saying that ''Trump says it's a cure" and peddling it to people, and some there being hospitalized. https://thehill.com/policy/healthcare/488972-nigeria-issues-chloroquine-warning-after-overdoses
