Global Level 4 Health Advisory – Do Not Travel

The Department of State advises U.S. citizens to avoid all international travel due to the global impact of COVID-19.  In countries where commercial departure options remain available, U.S. citizens who live in the United States should arrange for immediate return to the United States, unless they are prepared to remain abroad for an indefinite period.  U.S. citizens who live abroad should avoid all international travel.  Many countries are experiencing COVID-19 outbreaks and implementing travel restrictions and mandatory quarantines, closing borders, and prohibiting non-citizens from entry with little advance notice.  Airlines have cancelled many international flights and several cruise operators have suspended operations or cancelled trips.  If you choose to travel internationally, your travel plans may be severely disrupted, and you may be forced to remain outside of the United States for an indefinite timeframe.

Don't know anything inside the White House but generally, if international flights are dying out anyway as other countries restrict them and people are afraid to leave, it may be a de facto ban already. My feeling is they are trying the public "mitigation" strategy for a few weeks to see if it goes down, as any improvements in the r0 spread are only seen after a certain time period. If it doesn't go down, prepare for more restrictions, maybe top-down ones (eg. they ban restaurants entirely from being opened, although you could technically go out, there is almost no where to go except public parks.)

Typically the Travel Warnings are going up because of other countries restrictions (wild guess: americans abroad that are stuck are a major problem for the government and generate lots of complaints to congressmen from family members)  and the spread of the virus, as opposed to any new restriction the US is planning.

Try to think positive: the virus researchers will never want for funding for a long time after this.

It's already becoming an issue, I think. They were asking Trump about students stuck in Peru earlier. I think it's mitigation. It takes time and resources to get people back when commercial flights are stopped, so they are trying to minimize the need to do that, and at the same time letting people know they might be on their own for a while if they do choose to go anywhere.

Anyone else wondering if this is a precursor to something else......?

Absolutely.  I would not be surprised if a complete closure of the border is coming, with extremely limited exceptions.  The announcement is pretty clear in the messaging in my view.

Yes, that is expected.  I just wonder about more stringent quarantines/lockdowns....

Same line of thinking here - we're expecting the shelter-in-place in SF to extend far beyond the anticipated 1st week of April; it's just chaos now - it's has just started......

And already it has been extended to the entire state of California.  I'm expecting an announcement for ours here in Washington State imminently.
