Unemployment-Illinois.

Dear Visa Journey Community,

I am a legal permanent resident and I live in Chicago. I have never collected any form of assistance in my 9 years here in the US, I lived in NYC and moved to Chicago. I got laid off due to the corona-virus epidemic. I would like for the first time to apply for unemployment benefits. I am not here to collect tax payers money but I have no choice.

My issue is that I have no state ID  and never had one here and when I try to login to the portal, I can't fill out the form because of that. What can I do? Is there any way around this?

Thank you for your help,

Unemployment insurance is not taxpayer funded.  I would try to make an appointment at the Illinois Employment Security division.

If you are eligible, you should apply for unemployment benefits from the state where you held employment and not the state where you have moved.

If you are unable to file a claim before you relocate, you may need to go to a local unemployment office in your new location and file an interstate claim. 💥💥💥

First things first, it won't affect your GC. Unemployment is an insurance that you've paid into by working.

Secondly, you can also file a claim by phone, they can help you from there: 800-244-5631

Good luck!

In case it isn't clear, you don't need an IL ID. As long as you have a form of ID, any form of ID (your GC also works as ID if you don't have a NY ID).

It might be that the online form doesn't offer the option to select a different form, but you can also file a claim by phone to circumvent that.

These are the questions they'll ask you (give or take): https://www2.illinois.gov/ides/IDES Forms and Publications/CLI001F.pdf
