Using Unemployment Insurance during COVID-19

My wife (who originally came to the U.S. on a K-1 visa, but went through the whole process and has been a Permanent Resident for 9+ years now) just lost her job because of this COVID-19 Coronavirus. We live in California, and according to the EDD website anyone who's lost a job due to the COVID-19 virus can apply for unemployment insurance. My wife is currently in the middle of her Naturalization process (we applied in Jan 2020). So if she did this, would it negatively impact that Naturalization process? Especially with the new changes that were made to the "public charge" details by the Trump administration.

Would really love some guidance with this. Losing my wife's income during this virus has really hit our wallets, and getting the UI would be very helpful.

No, unemployment is not a  public charge benefit

YMMV

That's great to hear! Are you sure? Is there any official information (link) you could refer to that states this? I was unaware of that.

Unemployment is not means tested.  It is a state run unemployment fund that is primarily funded by the employers not the federal government

Ahhh... I see! So basically if my wife applies for U.I. that will not negatively affect her (currently pending) Naturalization process?

Understood. Sorry, I thought it might be relevant since she STARTED as a K-1 visa applicant. Understood though. Thanks!

Sorry to be repetitive with my question. I just don't want to jeopardize the currently pending Naturalization process she submitted. Thank you for your answers!

The final rule applies to applicants for admission and aliens seeking to adjust their status to that of lawful permanent residents from within the United States. The final rule also applies to applicants for extension of stay and change of status.

YMMV

So are you saying that it wouldn't even apply to my wife anyways because she's been a U.S. permanent resident for 9+ years?

I see... I guess the wording that just confuses me is... "The final rule also applies to applicants for extension of stay and change of status"... isn't going from green card holder to citizenship ("naturalization" process) a "change of status" technically? That is the wording that confuses me.

Change of Status refers to an alien legally entering the United States on a non-immigrant visa and wishes to change to another non-immigrant visa classification without being required to exit the US during the process.  Adjustment of status us changing from nonimmigrant to immigrant.
