Hi all,

Is the police clearance from district police different from police clearance at passport office (Mumbai Embassy)? Are both required or can one be substituted for the other? As my fiancee and I get ready for this step, would appreciate anyone from Mumbai or India who went through this recently.

Does it take a while to get both clearances? Will it be okay to send in packet 3 if we are just beginning to apply for these clearances or should we wait until we have the clearance in hand? Please advise.

Much thanks.

i believe that (don t hold me to my words) they are the same thing they are called police certificates. they perform background checks etc and assign these certs to you.

most states won t give you certificates unless you have the interview letter so you have to send in the packet 3 in order to get packet 4 and the interview letter. the certs are given within 48 hours from when you have asked for. check with your local passport office they are better help. don t wait to send in your packet 3 since you don t need those certs until your interview date.

I agree with Mala. We got district police certificate and also from local passport office. They stamp it on your passport at the passport office. I would recommend that you get this process started ASAP because sometimes it can take upto a month.

Agreed - Mala gave the right information.

Go to your passport office and district level police too and ask for the PCC, for visa purpose. Show them the NOA2 if you have it. Some places want the interview letter and some places don't, so you might as well try now.

The process to get a PCC should only take 24-48 hours to receive. However some places might want chaipani or they will delay giving it for more days (even weeks!).

The PCC should be given to the VFS office 10-15 working days before your interview. However if you don't have it by then, you can turn it in at the time of your interview.
