As someone who works full time for a Chinese company remotely and talks to these people every single day,  I can assure you things have not returned to any sort of normal. Are there some glimmers of hope of things moving in the right direction? Yes. But this is still not over for them. Once the government stopped silencing the researchers/doctors in the Wuhan University hospital and everything was exposed, they did a WAY better job of clamping down on the situation than we are doing right now. In fact, many countries are handling it much better than the US is right now.

If you think a lot of the numbers the American government has fed you over the years on various things are truth then I also have seawater to sell to fish. 😝

I don't even know how many people in my state are diagnosed with this. In China there's a internet platform that updates the stats by province & district. There are also graphs and analysis showing the how the numbers go and how many are still in treatment.

The US has not yet reached the levels of containment as China. So the expectation is we won't contain it as well as they have in the same amount of time that they did.

The US has nowhere remotely near the levels of testing that China did. So we don't even know where the clusters really are, making location-based quarantines and isolation pretty useless since they will only be used after it's too late to effectively contain.

 

No, the sky is not falling.

We will get through this.

Do not panic. Especially do not panic buy.

Also don't take it lightly - heed the advice of the medical professionals. Engage in social distancing. Wash.your.hands. Seek medical assistance if sick, and wear a mask (if you can find one...) if you are. Watch out for the people who are most at risk.

 

That said - other than the initial panic buying - I don't think most people in the US are overreacting at this time. We are becoming more aware of how to protect ourselves. We are engaging in social distancing. We have limited most large gatherings of people.

To many people/skeptics, that is the overreaction. The reality is that's not an overreaction. That's necessary steps according to the medical professionals.

Going beyond these steps may or may not be an overreaction...depending on how things play out. But the steps taken thus far are not yet there IMO.

Panicking and panic buying are overreactions.

But you’re right that we shouldn’t panic or hoard supplies. Stock up but don’t wipe the freaking shelves of everything. I just about lost it on a couple I saw in Walmart the other day pushing around three (!!) packed shopping carts full of all non perishables and toilet paper. This has to be taken very seriously but people need to remain calm and use their brains.

Skip the stores for now and make do, in a week or two, most people will be broke from panic buying and the stores will be restocked

I don’t believe any numbers China reported. 3000 dead? Multiplying this number by at least 20 times will be somewhat realistic.

China isn't the best model since they have a very authoritative government as you said. I'm currently living in South Korea and really wish the U.S. would communicate more with Korea on all the measures we have taken here. Our rate is falling really fast, in 3 weeks in my city our cured and discharged patients now out number the ones who still have it. The U.S. really needs to start getting it together with healthcare for this virus.

I did mention South Korea. Yes China has a very authoritative government however I’m sure you’ve realized US governors are starting to employ heavy authoritarian methods.

 

That said South Korea government better mimics the USA however the size and scale of USA better matches China I believe.

   SK was a great model for us. Unfortunately we are still having issues with testing. We haven't got results back from last Thursday, and the laboratory we are sending to directed us to find an alternative facility as they are about to run out. I don't even think we are capable of doing what SK did at the moment, unless they can scale the production of the tests to meet demand soon.

I believe I read the USA has ramped up testing now exceeding South Korea however we may still be a little behind factoring in the population difference.

 

if the USA numbers don’t start leveling off (particularly the number of deaths) in the next week or so then Houston, we got a problem! The irony of things is that China has now closed its borders do foreigners and Mexicans don’t want Americans coming through the border. 😂🤣😂

US numbers are going to accelerate exponentially as more people get tested, including people who die. count on it.

Steele works on the front lines of this, so frankly he has more credibility than anyone else in this thread.
