Hey there!

Firstly I'm not sure if I'm posting in the right place so sorry if I'm not!

I'm originally from the UK but recently I got married to my fiancee who's from the USA and I am now in the US too as of the 25th of October. I wanted to know what my options are for health insurance? All this corona virus news has got my spouse worried and so now we think would be best to get me some form of coverage. I don't have SSN yet and so I was wondering what my options are?

Many thanks!

That you don't have an SSN might force you to speak to a supervisor or fill out some forms by hand rather than online, but should not keep you from getting health insurance (and in fact I'm pretty sure that requiring an SSN is illegal).

If your fiancee has health insurance through work and it hasn't been too long since your wedding (you've been here since Oct 25, so if you came on a K-1 and married within 90 days it probably has been too long, but possibly not; she'll need to check with her employer's HR department), marriage is a qualifying event that will allow her to change her insurance to add you.

If not, you'll need to investigate getting insurance through the exchange or private insurance.

Can I just ask why you did not obtain an SSN and be added to insurance back when you got married?

Your options are slim. You have waited far too long to do either, and now need to wait for your SSN, if you haven't obtained your EAD or Green card yet. That being said an SSN is not a bar to obtaining health insurance, but it's really the fact so great of a time have elapsed you limit your options here.

Typically a person will obtain insurance via:

1) be added to the spouse's insurance.

2) sign up using the state or federal exchange during open enrollment, or if you have a qualifier under special enrollment (this option is out for you because you waited too long. you will not qualify for special enrollment and open enrollment is not active)

3) purchase a plan privately if you qualify. likely also would just need to be a catastrophic plan, which isn't that useful.

4) obtain a plan via your job if you are working.

5) temporary short term plans can be an option as a stop gap before transitioning over to 'real' insurance, but these do not cover pre-existing conditions.
