The Donald Trump administration offered “large sums of money” to get exclusive access to a coronavirus vaccine being developed by a German company, Die Welt reported Sunday.

According to the article, Trump was trying to get the Tübingen-based CureVac company — which also has sites in Frankfurt and Boston — to move its research wing to the United States and develop the vaccine “for the U.S. only.”

Ummm,. Die Welt is the name of a newspaper, fellas, not a vaccine company.

And good on our president for trying to secure more means to produce a vaccine.

I think you misread the article. He wanted to make sure that the vaccine was exclusive for the US, no one else. So he didn't want other countries to have the vaccine. Thankfully, the company refused such an absurd and inhumane deal.

Yes, THAT'S what he wanted!!  Because if we develop a vaccine in America, we'd NEVER share it worldwide, eh?  *smh*

Several vaccines have already been developed last month in various countries.  First human trial in the US to start tomorrow, apparently.  But Trump wanted to buy it and keep it in the US only.  Want to buy a bridge?

That's literally what he asked of them. Exclusively for the US. So that he can brag or use the vaccine as a leverage. I'm disgusted but not surprised. Pretty trumpian of him.

I did not see any quotes from anyone in the Politico story. Is this a “sourced” piece?  I realize that with the rampant TDS in the mainstream media they will spin anything Trump toward the negative, but this company has facilities in Germany and the US hence the reason the CEO was invited to the White House in the first place.  What is wrong with offering research funds or this issue?

Coronavirus: anger in Germany at report Trump seeking exclusive vaccine deal

MPs and ministers criticise display of ‘self-interest’ and accuse US president of electioneering

German ministers have reacted angrily following reports US president Donald Trump offered a German medical company “large sums of money” for exclusive rights to a Covid-19 vaccine.

“Germany is not for sale,” economy minister Peter Altmaier told broadcaster ARD, reacting to a front page report in Welt am Sonntag newspaper headlined “Trump vs Berlin”.

The newspaper reported Trump offered $1bn to Tübingen-based biopharmaceutical company CureVac to secure the vaccine “only for the United States”.

The German government was reportedly offering its own financial incentives for the vaccine to stay in the country.

The report prompted fury in Berlin. “German researchers are taking a leading role in developing medication and vaccines as part of global cooperation networks,” foreign minister Heiko Maas told the Funke Mediengruppe research network. “We cannot allow a situation where others want to exclusively acquire the results of their research,” said Maas, of the centre-left SPD.

“International co-operation is important now, not national self-interest,” said Erwin Rüddel, a conservative lawmaker on the German parliament’s health committee.

Christian Lindner, leader of the liberal FDP party, accused Trump of electioneering, saying: “Obviously Trump will use any means available in an election campaign.”

The German health minister, Jens Spahn, said a takeover of CureVac by the Trump administration was “off the table”. CureVac would only develop vaccine “for the whole world”, Spahn said, “not for individual countries”.

What's wrong with requesting a life saving vaccine to be exclusive to one country when the whole world needs it? Seriously?

So where is the direct quote where President Trump said this?  My understanding is that trials are starting today at some level, which is not this company, but offering research money to this company’s US Branch is certainly acceptable (get as many entities as possible working the issue).  That Germany took this as some sort of slight is their problem.

More fake news.  This story is a little more accurate

Germany tries to stop Trump from luring away firm working on coronavirus vaccine

A senior American official later said the Welt report was wrong.

"Not true. The Welt story was wrong," said Richard Grenell, acting Director of National Intelligence and the U.S. Ambassador to Germany, referring to the newspaper report.

"Now everyone is back peddling," he added on Twitter.

Not true. The Welt story was wrong. But Business Insider, Reuters and others went with it anyway despite not having their own sources. Now everyone is back peddling. https://twitter.com/amanbatheja/status/1239177184536862721
