Canada just announced restrictions on passengers who are not Canadians, you should look into the details since I do not think you'll be allowed in Canada at this time.

Beat me to it

Seems like US citizens are still exempted (but not permanent residents)?

Citizens, permanent residents of Canada and immediate family of citizens (?PR) will not be affected.

Edit: Actually, I am not entirely sure about US citizens.

Edit: I forgot green card holders don't need a visa to go to Canada, and you have the I-551, so you should be OK.

Yes, it is. You just have to have an eTA, which is like ESTA, and takes just a couple minutes to do.

And let's say you're right, it is applicable only for some countries... Indonesia must be one of them since my wife has been a couple times w/her Indonesian passport and green card.

But at this point, it is moot since Canada just shut its borders, so the OP can't go forward with his/her plan unfortunately.

expect US to follow through Canada and close the loop hole of any one trying to enter US using Canada as a stop. This is my opinion

I don't think that's even possible anymore. You can't transit through Canada without entering customs. The only people who could do so would be folks who can get through the Canadian border.

US Citizens, Diplomats, Flight crews, Canadian Citizens, Permanent residents are the only ones allowed to enter Canada at this time. Everyone else will be turned away as of the news from Trudeau this afternoon. Entering through landborder since you're coming from Jakarta is impossible unless they're either US or Canadian citizens.

If you are neither a citizen/permanent resident of Canada, immediate family of a Canadian citizen/permanent resident or a US citizen, you are NOT allowed to enter Canada even to drive down to the US.

A journalist asked the government panel today about even people with student visas in Canada, and the deputy Prime Minster Freeland said only if its for essential services. I suspect a ETA will not be granted but let us know how that works out.

This rule applies to everyone (Canadians and Americans) that enters Canada from a different country.

The border rule is not in effect yet. It will be closed on March 18.

Let us know how this plays out. I am quite curious myself.
