Cicada nightmares

The 17 year cicada has taken over the Chicago area. I mean it is bad! They are soooooooo noisy and flying everywhere! I go to a customer's house and they are all over the sidewalk, dive-bombing my car. The trees are full of them.

I have a question, are they all over or just the midwest? Do you have them?

Jackie

None here in DC quite yet, but they should be out in a bit. Fortunately it's just a regular year for us.

Our big year was a couple of years ago when Derek and I started dating. I don't think they have them up in Canada because he was sorta freaked out by them. Made a real impression on him though because for some reason he started calling me Cicada as a nickname and every once in awhile he still does. Dunno what that's all about.

ETA: I kinda like them. They do get really noisy, but for me it's one of those sounds that remind me of summers when I was a kid.

Actually, they do exist in Canada. One of my cats used to love catching them then bringing them INSIDE to chase around the house! I would wake up to hear this angry chrr-chkkk as it tried to escape. We have them here in Georgia as well although I haven't seen/heard them yet. I know they are around when the cicada killers show up - these are humungous hornet like looking black and yellow flying wasps. They are up to 2 inches long and look like they would sting like crazy - except they don't! The males don't have stingers and the females have a stinger that they use to paralyze cicadas then then carry them back to their ground nest (one wasp per nest - not a social wasp) and lay their egg on the cicada. The cicada then 'feed's the larva until the full grown cicada killer erupts from the ground the following June. They do dive bomb you if you get too close to where they have their nests but they are actually beneficial insects so I look forward to seeing them each year. This is what they look like:

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”
