Since it likely be a less than 1 year issue, the lpr should just come back.

Yes.   I pointed that out to him in my first post as he is only 6 months out.     

 

Everything else was just information "quoted" from the USCIS website to confirm to the OP that one year is the "real timeline"

Thank you all.  Yes, any Green cardholder or LPR can stay outside of the country for more than 6 months but less than a year without needing any type of paperwork, etc.

So, to put a twist on this issue, let's say an LPR will be closing to 1-year stay outside of the country on April 2020 (from April 2019) and its a lockdown and no flights available due to coronavirus.

 

Then, two things need to happen:  1) The LPR needs to apply for a Form I-131 before leaving abroad and 2) The LPR can apply for Form SB-1 returning resident to the US Embassy or Consulate to be able to return back to the US.
