It's nuts, I'm pretty sure I already had the virus. I was in China at ground zero for work back in November of last year for almost a month before anyone was even aware of this whole covid-19. I got home and was miserable for like 3 days ( Flu, aches and pain, a decent fever) but after the 3 days I was feeling good again, no issues, thought it was a case of the flu, and I'm still alive and here. I've had hangovers last longer!!! LOL.  So, Take it from a survivor, you can get thru it!!!!

china-.jpg

You could have had anything. There is no way to be sure you had COVID-19 unless you have had a positive test result. Even if you did, it has not been around long enough to determine how long immunity would last, but there have certainly been cases of people having relapses and/or catching it a second time. There have even been cases of people who died after seemingly being recovered. We do not know enough about this to generalize based on any one persons experience with the illness.

By now everybody knows that the societal reaction to the  virus is worse than the virus itself. I took the OP's post as a rant out of frustration. When people are frustrated they respond similarly like the OP. The chance of dying is pretty low if you are a healthy individual. Yes, it would be nice to be able to spend this time with loved ones. But no government is going to risk others for that.

Take a look at the symptoms of the virus.

Coronavirus_Symptoms___WHO_joint_mission_2.png

As you can see, you'd have worse symptoms from eating 2 week old sushi that was bought at a truck stop. But for now,  all we can do is wait in out.

I would hardly describe my post as a rant. Neither in tone nor in content. It was a question, (really, re-read the post).

Which some folks were kind enough to actually respond to -- and for which I thank them (humanitarian parole etc).

Really?

According to Dr. Anthony Fauci, one of the leading experts on infectious disease in the U.S., and director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, once a person has contracted the new coronavirus, they cannot become infected again.

Go ahead and stay in your house and sing the national anthem out your window if it makes you feel any better. I'm on my way to the airport to get back in time for work tomorrow.

There have been multiple cases, and one as recently as yesterday showing that while they had ''recovered'' they quickly relapsed after a period of time. This is a very large unknown with the virus. Did these people simply somehow re-contract it? Were they actually never recovered in the first place. Or is this a specific way the virus can possibly operate - either having a dormant and reactivation phase or does it continue to shed after a long period of time. One gentleman, that was from a cruise ship is continually held in isolation, despite having 'recovered' physically and feels fine, he has been still shedding for 40+ days. When Fauci says that a person cannot become infected again, he may mean that he believes there is possibility of either a 'reactivation' or continual shed.

Well, hopefully next week since they have a test that seems to work now, I can get tested for the antibodies to see if I even had it. Before they wouldn't test unless you were showing symptoms, but now I think they are testing anyone who wants it. But I have been fine since the rough bout in December. Serves patient Zero right if he caught it from bat soup, the way they were slurping that stuff in China I am amazed the whole country isn't infected. I will try just about anything (and really have), but I drew the line at Bat soup. LOL.

Dr Fauci said it is likely that most people will have immunity to the virus after they recover. He did not say how long that immunity will last. The virus has not been circulating long enough to determine if any of that is true or not. We already have 4 strains of Coronavirus that circulate in humans, and people can contract them annually, and sooner in some cases. The immunity is not lasting. We don't know if this new strain will be different or not. Everything we are doing is geared to preventing spread and treating people who are sick now.

I don't have time to sit at home. I work in a hospital and will be treating patients every day until I get sick and am forced to stay home. That includes today, when I chose to go in to work instead of sitting at home.  I see people come in every day, ignore the precautions that we have in place, and potentially infect everyone else they come in contact with. I don't react to what people do when they think they have it, however I do correct people who are misinformed. You don't know if you had the virus or not. You admitted that yourself. You also can't know if you will get it in the future either. Even if you did have it.

If you had it and recovered quickly, I am very happy for you. It will be that way for most people, and when people see that, they will stop panicking. However it won't be that way for everyone. Some people don't get through it.

Guess we will see what happens. I also have a job I will be forced to work at no matter how bad it will supposedly get. I just got a lecture Friday from the Big guy in charge that we are actually splitting the shifts ( With about a 30 min window between them) to reduce the possibility of someone from one shift passing it onto the next shift, so in theory if one shift becomes infected, the other one will still be able to come on duty to provide coverage. A little extreme I think, but if it's the rules, I follow them. Until they ground all flights it is still legal for me to travel ( I hope for about the next 4 hours so I can get home at least).

I wasn't suggesting you are doing anything wrong or anything. I'm just saying I don't think you can be certain you had it, or even if you did, that you couldn't get it in the future.

Even if I do get it and recover, I am not going to take any chances. I would go about life as normal, but I would still approach it as if I could contract it again until I am more certain that it couldn't happen. I would only isolate myself if I was showing symptoms or if they ask me to quarantine voluntarily.

As a side note, I am kinda bummed out if I had it, because we also got approved for an additional 14 days of sick time this year if I even think I am sick ( I'm too greedy to miss out on the overtime honestly), but maybe I can take a few of those in a few months after this thing blows over, of course they will probably revoke the days in a few months once they realized they are panicking for no reason. Or it will go the other way and everyone is dead in 2 months ( This is how people are reacting now) I'm good with either way, it's either blowing over or going Zombieland style. LOL!

I think it's human nature right now. If they said something would kill 1 out of 4 people, everyone would stay home. If they say 1 out of 5000 would die, everyone would do what they normally do. When they say most people will be OK, but everyone should stay home, people go a bit crazy.

1 in 5000 adds up to 65,000 in the US, I would be surprised if we get to that, what I found more difficult to calculate is the impact of over reaction, that could well end up being far more significant.

One in 5000 would be a bad flu season. I don't think the data for Covid-19 is complete enough to speculate on the mortality rate with any degree of accuracy, but it seems to spread easier than flu and more people have severe outcomes than flu. I am also unaware of any treatment that has been consistently effective in severe cases. If it spreads enough, it is going to kill more people than seasonal flu does, but I don't think the rates are as high as the 2-3% that they are currently showing. It's hard to have accurate numbers when they can't test everyone.

There is a massive variance in the numbers for flu, no reason to believe there will not be for this as well. And seems reasonable that those most susceptible to flu will also be to this.
