I have two middle names which has proven to be a challenge to live with here in the US.... 🙈 So now I want to drop one of the middle names, does that count as a name change? Nothing changes other than 1 of my 4 names disappeares. Can I do this change in connection with filing for naturalization (online?)?

From my own experience I can tell you they mainly care about the last name and to a lesser extent the first name. For most practical purpose dropping a second middle name would not be noticed.

Regarding doing it for naturalization, it depends on your reviewing Officer if that will even be considered a name change. My name changed (actually corrected) during my adjustment of status immigration process and it was never even considered a name change. My last name  (fathers name) I’ve used all my adult life doesn’t even exist on my birth certificate.

Just another random guy from the internet with an opinion, although usually backed by data!

I would put the preferred last, first and middle names on the name change section of the online form, and like Ray.Bonaquist mentioned, the IO can tell you if it's a name change or not. Are your middle names the ones from your birth certificate?

Name Change

Can I change my name during the N-400 naturalization process?

Yes. When you become a citizen, you can also change your name. You may want to make your name shorter or longer, like by adding or taking out a middle or last name. You may also want to change your name completely or make your middle name your first name.
