Republicans Tried to Sneak Abortion Restrictions into the Coronavirus Bill

As lawmakers neared a deal on a coronavirus rescue package that would include paid sick leave and free virus testing, a few roadblocks emerged. Among them: Republican attempts to wedge anti-choice restrictions into the House's relief bill, turning—if momentarily—a public health crisis into an abortion debate.

The tensions reportedly revolved around the Hyde Amendment, a decades-old provision that blocks federal funds from going to abortion services, preventing millions of low-income Americans on Medicaid from accessing abortion care.

According to conservative media, some top Republicans believed a stipulation in the House bill requiring the government to reimburse private laboratories doing coronavirus testing could effectively overturn the Hyde Amendment by establishing a government funding stream not subject to the restrictions. In response, anti-choice lawmakers insisted on including language in the legislation that would reaffirm the principles of the amendment.

This is what they call "sneaking abortion restrictions into":

Obviously, the only changes here, would have been Pelosi's. Scummy.

Clearly people are hung up on titles and not substance, which is why this clickbait was published.

How about you get off that high horse and show some indignation that Republicans are dragging abortion into this even though no one, nor their mother even remotely hinted or mentioned anything relation to abortion in this bill? Delaying much needed measures because they feel the need to jump to the occasion to try and strengthen foundation for their unrelated nonsense. Essentially keeping the lives of millions of people hostage because they want a pinky swear that something that isn't happening won't be happening in the future.

Politico confirmed after this article went to press that the Hyde Amendment provision was eventually removed from the stimulus later on Thursday and will hit the House floor as a separate bill.

Hyde amendments are regularly put into spending bills for a reason.. it's law.

The attempt to write a Hyde removal provision clearly demonstrates Pelosi "dragged abortion into this". So, if you're going to be indignant about something, point it in the right direction.

"This pretty much sums everything up: @realDonaldTrump is moving quickly to protect Americans from coronavirus and its economic impact... Democrats are spending their time trying to create an abortion slush fund!" Donald Trump Jr. reacted.

"Using this crisis as a vehicle for appropriate tax dollars that can be spent on abortions is about as gross as it can possibly get. Appropriate only what’s needed. No more and definitely no less," author Jason Hasson tweeted.

"Pelosi wanted to sneak in a billion dollars in funding for abortion programs through the coronavirus stimulus package. Don’t ever tell me the Democrats aren’t politicizing this situation," Human Events managing editor Ian Miles Cheong said.
