Everyone buys water here because we have bad water. There was no water left at all last night at the store just rows upon rows of empty pallets, and they were starting to get into the Perrier. Saw a line coming out of a pharmacy with people carrying stacks of TP and probably the weirdest sighting... an old lady with a CARTLOAD of applesauce jars...

I've always wondered why these people go for water instead of just getting a Brita or zero water pitcher. Seems you'll get more mileage that way.

And vaping.  I started thinking about all those folks that had issues with vaping a few months back.  Btw, the stopping smoking suggestion should also include MJ.

I laid down the law with Alex about vaping yesterday. He has been doing that instead of smoking cigarettes for a while now, but it's just got to stop. I went out and bought him the gum and patches this morning so he can figure out what works for him, and asked him to please set up an appointment to see a doctor for some Chantix or similar. He's only 35 and in great health otherwise but I'm not taking chances. It made me feel like a nag to say these things but I'm putting that to one side in favor of his health.

I recommend edibles to everyone who needs some cannabis right now, and I don't blame you if you do!

Can anyone explain to me why so many folks are buying bottled water?

I worked when I had caronavirus (just a guess) back in December.

The same reason they're raiding supermarkets shelves of toilet paper as if we're coming upon the next apocalypse and they're going to barricade themselves in their homes for the next month or months. Irrationality/hysteria is more contagious than the Wuhan virus.

I have both. If you lose water supply, it's good to have a back up. In northern states, losing water can be something as simple as a broken furnace in a bad freeze. We had no water supply for 3 days once just because a construction guy had a short attention span.

I wouldn't buy extra just because of Coronavirus, but I do keep my regular supply stocked and rotated.

Fair point.

I live in the second biggest metropolitan area in the country. I live in a small city that's surrounded on three sides by the City of Los Angeles and the ocean on the other. We have clean and safe and not too bad-tasting drinking water. The shelves are almost empty of bottled water. It makes NO sense that people are acting like this.

Ran into my neighbor in the hallway this morning and she said our local Whole Foods is a madhouse, everything flying off the shelves, even really random things like jars of olives and quinoa, lines unbelievably long. I was able to do some shopping at a smaller and more local store, but this is insanity now.

Haha, sounds fun. We did some little groceries yesterday and there was still some TP (not much), part of me toyed with the idea of putting it on eBay for shits and giggles (pun intended). Our grocery stores pretty much only ran out of sanitiser, Walgreens too, but that's about it. TP is depleting though.

California is probably lower risk of having water supply issues, but it's still possible. The only things I haven't really seen lately are sanitizer and TP.  I found toilet paper lately at the local organic grocery, but we didn't need any. I gave passing thought to buying one pack, but I think there are people out there who need it more than we do.

I don't have an issue with people stocking up and having emergency supplies. I have done it for a long time. I do have an issue with people who are starting now without really giving it any thought or having any real reason to do so. We have unnecessary supply chain issues for no real reason now,  and people are stuck buying TP on Amazon for $200 bucks a case. There was no real risk of a shortage, but now we have an artificial one and people are having to respond the same as if it was real.

The Costco I went to still had quite a bit of bottled water left at least around 1pm.  Almost every cart I saw had at least one case.  We have good water here, and we have a filter/pitcher as well as a filter on the fridge, so I don’t see the need mostly (we always keep a little on hand).  I didn’t look, but I think the Costco was out of TP as I did not see any of that in anyone’s cart.  I did pick up some hand soap though.

Yes, I suppose those on wells would keep a supply on hand.  We always keep some on hand as the wife likes to take it when she works out.  It is interesting you mention furnace, we just had ours go out three weeks ago.  We also decided to bite the bullet and put in a whole house generator in January.

Thanks for passing up that loo roll. What a weird thing to write! But we are all in this together, every last one of us. The more we think of each other, the stronger we will be.

I feel like once it spreads around enough and there are a large number of people who have recovered, things will start to move back towards normal. Until then people are dealing with the unknowns and no sense of clear direction from the people leading the response. I am not surprised people panic. There is no reason to, but it is a natural reaction to the circumstances.

It's like the known-knowns/unknown-knowns/known-unknowns/unknown-unknowns thing. We have a bunch of known-unknowns that are driving us nuts. People are going to get sick -- who? People are going to die -- who? Stocks of toilet tissue are almost non-existent -- when are we going to have more? Things are getting weird -- how weird are they going to get?

Same here.  I could have taken a pack at our local grocer two days hence, but since I have a bidet as well as a Tabo, and understand basic hygiene, I didn't see the need.  There were about 10-13 packs on the shelf, and I passed.  They were all gone today.
