Beaches are reopening in the county today. It's top local news here. I live 5 blocks from the beach but I'm not going until maybe Friday or Monday. It's going to be too busy today and tomorrow, and the weekend will be busy too.

It's not a blanket "we're shut down" order until August. Retail is slowly reopening with curbside pickup. Offices will be opening with restrictions. It's going to be a measured approach that fits how the county is doing. We're doing a decent job in the county to keep the numbers low compared to other big cities like NYC and Detroit, but it's still too high compared to other counties in the state. We're not flattened yet and infections and deaths are still too high. It's a problem that comes from being the biggest county in the country.

I trust the county health department. The state is giving the counties leeway to be more responsive to their different situations, so some of the counties up north are going to restart dine in at restaurants soon. We're not ready down here. The great majority of people in the county agree. Different strokes for different folks. :)

The state is giving more leeway due to the citizens having a fit, not to mention the supposed $54 Billion dollar deficit

Not to be impolite, but that's really not what's happening here? That's not what is being reported in papers large and small. People are super focused on staying healthy while getting businesses up and running while being sensible and sensitive to community needs. Sure, there are loud and noisy people calling for a reopening, flouting health directives. But they are in the vast, vast minority compared to how people are handling it on a day to day basis. Nobody likes wearing masks, I need a haircut, my nails suck, and I miss shopping in a grocery store where I'm not waiting in a long line to get in. But honestly, that's just about me, it's not about the needs of everyone around me. And somewhere like here, we need to be more careful because we're living closer to each other. Not so up North, so counties like Modoc are opening up. That's great! California is reopening in line with a plan that is responds to the needs and realities of its many communities.

But people are suffering here. My friends are suffering. I have been paying rent for a friend (there is a moratorium on evictions for non-payment, but I felt better knowing it was a debt she'd never have to repay), and some bills for two others. I don't live in a bubble of privilege -- my friends are retail workers and actors and gig workers as well as city planners and attorneys and IT professionals. Some of us are weathering it better than others, and all of us want life to go back to normal. But the plan here is to prioritize health and life based on scientific information over a full restart. The governor and the county have been clear with us all along -- we will reopen but there needs to be balance between competing needs. It could have been a LOT worse here, and it's still not ideal. But we could have been a New York, and we're not.

It looks like you guys had a ~4% increase in cases yesterday. While yes it's higher than the national average of around 1.5-2%, it's still not too shabby. I said this 2 months ago when we were at like 30%...anything under 7% imo should warrant seriously considering a gradual reopening. 3 months seems totally excessive to me at this point.

Interesting that retail there is only now opening for curbside pickup. Most places to my understanding kept that all along, and just closed for close contact. Over here we were allowed to do curbside pickup or takeaway the whole time, and next week retail opens up completely(with restrictions, but you can actually shop inside).

I will be meeting with a couple of friends who had it on Saturday, will be interesting to hear their thoughts especially as one is a top Surgeon.

Important to remember that in all countries 99.9 something percent of those who get it survive, the 4th digit is where you start to see variance. Actually the guy in front of me in ACE today had it.

~13,000 diagnosed cases = 0.0017% of population

I saw a figure of 75,000 mentioned but of course nobody knows and most will not be residents of care homes.

Deroy Murdock: On coronavirus and nursing homes, DeSantis and Cuomo offer life-and-death contrast

Stabilized COVID-19 patients were sent from hospitals to nursing homes, including some cited for frightfully poor hygiene before the pandemic (e.g. one staffer failed to wash his hands after grappling with an occupant’s incontinence). As April 25’s New York Post reported, hospitals transferred 70 COVID patients to Harlem’s Terrence Cardinal Cooke home. By May 8, COVID-19 had killed 32 tenants. Hospitals sent 19 COVID survivors to Staten Island’s Carmel Richardson facility. By May 8, the virus had extinguished 56 there.

Oh no I do understand about those.  And I agree we all have to get back to work.  I will probably have to go back soon.  I hope it is all done in a way to keep people as safe as possible.  Due to my health conditions I am worried about going back to work.  Very worried.  But it has to be done.  I was simply replying to the post that said "some things are worse than death.  And I said "not to me".  Because I  really want to live.

Makes you wonder how many Nursing Homes will survive, can see many of them being sued into oblivion.

As they should be. If we cannot take care of our elderly in this country and give them a dignified life even in a care home, then they don't deserve to operate. My time spent in hospital wards made me observe the best of nursing the elderly and the very worst.

My grandma's old nursing home does have a small outbreak, but nothing on the level of some of these places have that has killed off nearly the entire population.

One case could do it, legal fees alone, most of these sort of businesses operate on the edge. Well I am sure you have heard of the UK issues.

Very expensive operation, very few people could afford such good accomodation.
