McLaren Medical to furlough many of its 500 doctors, physician assistants, nurse practitioners

The McLaren Medical Group will furlough physicians and other members of its staff as it deals with a 60% drop in patient volumes, the organization said Wednesday in a statement to the Free Press.

According to its website and the statement, the McLaren Medical Group employs nearly 500 health care providers, including more than 300 physicians, as well as nurse practitioners, physician assistants and nurse midwives. It is a part of McLaren Health Care, a Grand Blanc-based health system that includes 14 hospitals in Michigan.

In her statement, Julie Lepzinski, president and CEO of McLaren Medical Group, said the pandemic has significantly affected operations but Lepzinski did not say how many employees would face shortened hours.

My son and his wife work in two different hospitals in Portland OR.  Talked with him yesterday and he says admissions at both are way down, and last several days no one presenting with symptoms of corona virus.  A few weeks ago they were told to prepare for a huge wave of sick people.  It just is not happening.

That is what I have been hearing as well.  I thought this story was interesting since it involved Drs. PAs, and NPs being laid off.  I have two nieces that are NPs, one in Iowa and one in Michigan, they both work in very rural areas where there are few Drs., so they are probably safe.  I need to ask them.

So in Michigan they are even closing entire hospitals.

Detroit hospitals are laying off workers by the hundreds even as pandemic rages

A day earlier, Beaumont Health confirmed it would sideline one of its eight hospitals — Beaumont, Wayne — and hold it empty to serve “as a reserve COVID-19 hospital” at an undefined point in the future.

It's a transition period now. Covid-19 admissions are leveling off and dropping, but elective procedures are still deferred until the end of the month. People are also not coming into ER with mild symptoms anymore. Last month everyone with a runny nose or sore throat was coming in. Now,  I think people understand it's more risky to come into ER if they are not really sick.

We are taking one day off a week. I would actually be OK with getting furloughed, but hospitals risk losing staff permanently if they do that, so they want us to use vacation time instead. For now. Health care workers are fortunate that we all still have jobs, and even those without jobs will probably be able to find work sooner than a lot of people. We have also had a few people quit and go to NY on short term contracts, and they are make double what they would have made here.

Does this enable recovery/decompression in a welcomed fashion, or are people resenting having to burn their vacation time?

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

Depends how much time off someone had banked I guess. We haven't been allowed to use any time off since March 1st, so they have increased the cap for some of us old timers to keep accruing, and they are also allowing us to go to negative so people that didn't have any time can still get paid. They know they have to pay it back down the road though, so younger people are not too happy about being forced to use it. They are giving us numbers where all the staff in a department have to use a total number of hours by mid May, so some of us who are maxed out will probably take more time off, and some of the younger people might take less. We'll see how it works.  Ironically, the people that need it most are probably ICU staff, and they are still too busy and still restricted from taking any time at all.

I tell people who are unhappy losing some hours to consider the alternative. The only reason we are not seeing layoffs is because they still expect workloads to rebound quickly. I'm not as convinced that will happen. I expect hospitals will eventually see the same layoff numbers as everyone else. Just more likely to see them on the other side of the peak.

What a healthcare system. Too bad expletives can't be posted here, I'd be going to town.

Wayne should take it over, Michigan should then add penalties to Beaumont so the local jurisdiction can run it.

We really can do better than this. Just garbage healthcare all around. People need to wake up and do something about this. Its not going to fix itself, nor is the government going to do it by itself, it clearly favors this useless industry.

People can only change this by voting for someone who is willing to see it through. Unfortunately more people value partisanship over getting something done. Democrats screwed up health care reform, and Republicans have made it worse. It's not going to change if the average voter can't get past that mental block and start holding people accountable. Lets see if it's an issue in November.

Whitmer is not on the ballot in November unfortunately, unless we get a recall petition approved, or she is Sleepy Joe’s pick.

Trump is catching undeserved venom from the press about shuting too late, staying down too long, constantly getting questions about the exact date he will reopen. Which of course none know for sure.

1- Trump stands up and declares he has the ultimate power to decide when states will reopen and the Federal Govt has total control.

2- Press and many mostly Dem Govoners lose their minds and declare " Who does he think he is a King?"

3.  Trump recanted and says. Ok each State will reopen on a timeline set by thier Governor.

Well played Mr President well Played.

I was initially upset by this.

However, on second thought, this was brilliant.

Complaints about "too much too soon / too little too late" cannot now attach to him.
