I'm not sure if this has been posted elsewhere but this is some very good, commonsense, non-hysterical guidance: https://www.flattenthecurve.com/

This is why, when we see information about new cases dropping off, it doesn't mean the spread has stopped. The quarantine and isolation measures are working towards leveling off the number of new infections at a given time, but the trade off being the pandemic situation may persist at lower numbers for longer.

I can’t help but laugh at the hysteria in the USA over stupid things like toilet paper. I took a picture of the (sold out)  TP aisle at my local store outside of Chicago and sent it to my fiancé in Ukraine. She sent me back a picture from her store. It’s hard to explain why we have to stockpile TP... because we don’t!

That's the way it SHOULD be, and would be here, were it not for the MSM hysteria-causing BS.  Remember when the MSM said there was going to be a gas shortage?  And then suddenly people rushed out and bought gas like crazy, and there was a (temporary) shortage?

Isn’t this what Dr. Fauci has said, and wouldn’t that be better for our health resources rather than hammer them with an overwhelming amount of cases.  Kind of like ripping off the bandaid slowly, usually not advised, but in this case it may be the best course.

Correct. Once containment was no longer feasible, the goal was to mitigate the impact on the health system and treatment resources. I just don't know that they have been completely clear with that. It does mean we might have to be prepared with the current measures for longer than initially expected. It's not a big deal. We will adjust quickly.

In Russia, my wife told me they are getting a consistent, unified message from leadership not to panic and that it's just like the flu. I'm not sure if that is the right message, but it is stopping people from going stir crazy. If a lot of people start getting sick, it could change.

Most people here wouldn't have been hoarding, but just being social creatures, human beings will react to that situation. Once a few people start buying all the TP or food or whatever, it triggers a domino effect. Once people realize that TP will be back on the shelves the next day, they will calm down.

Also, it is a much different mentality with respect to shopping in Russia.  Most folks living in flats do not have a lot of storage space, so more store trips with smaller purchases tend to be the norm there.  I know when I visit for two weeks or so, I will make at least six trips to the local grocery store.

The other thing is, more people probably have experience with shelves running out and not to panic over it. When I told my wife about the shelves being bare, she said that's what every day was like at the end of the Soviet era. You just made do with what you had, or what you could find. You couldn't let yourself go crazy over it.

I have heard the same story as well.

Never thought of that angle, but makes sense

We have been able to find more stuff at the small stores like Dollar General and Dollar store. But it was funny when we went to Dollar General earlier they had a pallet of TP out front, and EVERY SINGLE PERSON that was going in grabbed a pack before they went into the store. We then went to Walmart later and they had no TP, wipes, hand soap.

It's all psychological at this point. It's hard not to react to seeing empty shelves and not knowing when they will be restocked, even when we know they will be. We hear that we need to have a 3 week emergency supply and then they say there is nothing to worry about. I think humans have more trouble with inconsistent messages than with getting positive or negative ones. So now when people find TP, they can't reconcile that, and they continue to buy a six month supply and we run out again and it's just a cycle. I imagine at some point no one will need to buy toilet paper for months and the shelves will be full again.

So now I can use some food I have been stocking up for a couple years now.

Same here. I always try to keep a couple of month supply of necessities. What we are seeing now is what happens when everyone waits until after the emergency to start stocking up. Hopefully people learn from this.
