So what did Taiwan do to "do it right"?  My wife keeps in close contact with our friends there.  The ONLY thing we can conclude is that everyone is encouraged to wear masks.........and the government issues 9 masks bi-weekly to citizens.   The government has developed an app which now allows residents to order their ration of masks online, and pick them up at 7-11, Family Mart, etc....all tracked by their national health card.  Taiwan has stepped up production of their own masks since most were, at one time, imported from China.  BTW, schools remain open there after an extended winter break.

https://www.cnn.com/2020/04/04/asia/taiwan-coronavirus-response-who-intl-hnk/index.html

Taiwan has a world-class health care system, with universal coverage. As news of the coronavirus began to emerge from Wuhan in the run up to the Lunar New Year, officials at Taiwan's National Health Command Center (NHCC) -- set up in the wake of SARS -- moved quickly to respond to the potential threat, according to a recent report in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).

"Taiwan rapidly produced and implemented a list of at least 124 action items in the past five weeks to protect public health," report co-author Jason Wang, a Taiwanese doctor and associate professor of pediatrics at Stanford Medicine, said in a statement. "The policies and actions go beyond border control because they recognized that that wasn't enough."
This was while other countries were still debating whether to take action. In a study conducted in January, Johns Hopkins University said Taiwan was one of the most at-risk areas outside of mainland China -- owing to its close proximity, ties and transport links.

Among those early decisive measures was the decision to ban travel from many parts of China, stop cruise ships docking at the island's ports, and introduce strict punishments for anyone found breaching home quarantine orders.
In addition, Taiwanese officials also moved to ramp up domestic face-mask production to ensure the local supply, rolled out islandwide testing for coronavirus -- including retesting people who had previously unexplained pneumonia -- and announced new punishments for spreading disinformation about the virus.

How could it do better, exactly?  What would you have done in 2018 if you were president or part of the CDC, not knowing a pandemic was looming?

Statistics are nice, I enjoy them.  But you and I both know the data can be used to paint whatever picture we want them to.  1.5 million tests in a nation that was "woefully unprepared and not testing" is a pretty damn good number.

China just ordered 200,000 body bags.  I wonder what THOSE are for?

Test maybe?  Dont know the big hoopla about percent of people tested. The real thing that matters is the number of people tested, that need to be tested and isolated.

It would be wasteful to run around willy nilly testing people, unless we have unlimited test kits.

We could test 5000 today randomly that may be negative this week and positive next week

So angry this morning. I'm supposed to have an appointment tomorrow at the cancer center to decide about infusions. An appointment the doctor purposefully put off for four months of me waiting around for no reason. No one has called me to cancel or confirm, so I call this morning and ask what he heck is going on. "Oh he's been gone for weeks we have no idea if he's seeing patients". So do I have this appointment or not?! "We can't tell you, we'll try and call you back"........ you know every other doctor that has cancelled on me had the decency to call and do it, and you'd think since this is a place that is seeing critically ill people with cancer and blood disorders that the staff would actually care! I've had test results sitting for months they refuse to call about. If they don't call me back, I'm cancelling tomorrow, probably going to have to switch to another practice, and wait even more months for treatment. It's exhausting that I've waited months to see certain people to only have them cancel. And I know, it's what they've been ordered to do by the hospital management, but people still need treatments and to be seen. My husband threw his back out two weeks ago. I think he needs to be seen but it's doubtful I'm going to be able to get him an appointment. If I come in wearing gloves and a mask and you check my temp, what risk am I really?

I mean, I suspect the trans issue was raised facetiously (I could be wrong...) but it does raise an interesting question: do trans people who have begun or completed transition using hormone therapy become more or less prone to poor health outcomes than if they had not transitioned? Like, if you are FTM, do you become more likely to have a worse outcome if you have or are transitioning?

I expect these are things we may learn in the years to come, when this moment is being considered with greater perspective than in the emergency situation we're in.

I have absolutely no idea what the impact of transitioning is vis a vis Corona, there does seem to have been a significant reduction in the coverage of such issues recently.

Outside of the obvious gain of brain power, there may well be the risk of covid, since it seems to be worse in males.

Whilst I think of it the UK Media is making a big fuss about people sunbathing and somehow it is an issue but can not find why.

Important also to make sure you socially distant from Tigers,  minds you I have been doing that for a long time.

I've actually seen a few stats where they have a very small subset of "unknown" gender.

Men seem to fair worse than women.

Currently in MD there are more women than men infected, though I believe in terms of deaths, more men are dying. We actually collect all of this sort of data on the reporting forms including race, ages, and different gender, but we're not publicly releasing most of that info.

So frustrating man. The primary said if I wasn't happy with the guy I should get a second opinion.. it's just every day I go without treatment I feel like crud. And sure I don't want to put anyone at risk by me going out, especially myself.. but his whole attitude towards patients is terrible.

I would certainly think that trans groups are placed in the higher risk category. Statistically according to this: https://transequality.org/covid19 HIV with COVID would absolutely be a high risk concern, and not just for those in the LGBTQ community.
