I really enjoyed Mandy, which is kind of OTT with the violence and gore but if you like exploitation movies, it's a good one.

Chinese markets again selling bats -- likely source of deadly pandemic -- reporters say

China is permitting wild animal markets to resume selling bats, believed to be the source for the deadly coronavirus now killing people across the globe, including over 2,500 Americans to date, British reporters say.

Chinese authorities in January closed down the Wuhan city “wet” market after five of its workers were among the first diagnosed with what would become COVID-19.

A number of scientists say it is likely that bats either infected other market animals or humans directly. Bats carry a variety of coronaviruses and are blamed on for the 2002 SARS coronavirus epidemic that also originated in a Chinese market.

Ugh. People need to leave poor bats alone. They should be respectfully loved and feared.

Something of concern for those that have pets:

While there's no conclusive evidence that dogs can contract COVID19, it seems as if cats can. It doesn't seem the cats are spreading it to humans but humans are spreading it to the cats and cats can spread it to other cats. This seems to be a lab based study, but there has now been a couple of cases of cats becoming sick around the same time as their owners (I do not know about their outcomes). Ferrets may also be susceptible. https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-020-00984-8 Just like in humans I don't believe there is a treatment or cure for cats either. Other types of coronaviruses do infect cats. If it can infect a dog it seems to be a less likely occurrence but not without a possibility. Several labs have developed animal-based tests but veterinarians certainly want more information about how this disease could be a concern in the future, and while they say we shouldn't panic, we should be equally as cautious about hand washing  and keeping distance around pets if we are sick. https://www.sciencemag.org/news/2020/03/should-pets-be-tested-coronavirus

Another issue with veterinarians right now - they are running out of masks and gloves too.

Also:

  • Our daily total is still rising.
  • We now have major outbreaks at nursing homes all over the state.
  • One rural hospital is at max capacity.
  • We lost our first few patients in this county last night.
  • We've also had outbreaks at Amazon, meat packing plants, and USPS.

This bigotry about bats is disturbing.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”
