I am not sure there is a certain origination, maybe Kansas was where it spread from in the US? The issues around trench warfare, packed field hospitals, sick troops, gas attacks etc seem a much more likely breeding ground.

The issue with WW1 was that the sickest people were getting sent back home or to larger hospitals, spreading the most virulent variants of the virus all over, whereas the people with mild illness remained in the trenches and recovered. This is the opposite of what normally happens (where the sickest people stay home and those with mild illness spread it around).

There is some speculation that the 1918 flu didn't start out any worse than any other year. It was mostly the wartime conditions, troop movement and lack of nutrition, that ended up with an extremely virulent strain spreading around the world.

I'm trying to find a link to the podcast I listened to last week about this. I fell asleep during it (the podcast was good, but I had a migraine and was trying to nap) so I can't remember what it was off the top of my head. I do recall them saying it was called the Spanish Flu because during WWI Spain was neutral, and had actual news coming out of it whereas the other powers in the war had their press muzzled to some extent. So there were more reports coming out of Spain about this new flu than from anywhere else, even if it wasn't "from" there. I think that's where I heard the Kansas thing too.

It's mostly that the earliest records of people getting sick were at Fort Riley Kansas. Given the record keeping and reporting of the day, I don't think it can be proven conclusively, but they do think it spread from Kansas to the front lines in Europe, and then back to other major European military bases that had hospital facilities.

They also suspect that the 1918 strain arose due to genetic recombination of different swine, avian and human strains because they had a large poultry farm and pig farm at fort Riley, which is something that is now known to be a major risk factor for having flu strains jump from one species to another.

The US did not enter WW1 until 1917 and took some time before they sent any troops, well certainly any of numerical consequence. And certainly in Colorado it was the second hit that was more virulent.

I looked at a few UK sources and they tend to focus on the war and France so I suppose that was what I was taught, but a few mention Kansas as a possible source, also suggest the second version might have come out of Switzerland?

Anyway no certainty, the war certainly impacted the spread both in the US and elsewhere. My Grandparents would have been alive at that time but I do not remember them every mentioning it, maybe too young.

Peter Gibbons:
What would you do if you had a million dollars?

Lawrence:
I'll tell you what I'd do, man, two chicks at the same time, man.

Peter Gibbons:
That's it? If you had a million dollars, you'd do two chicks at the same time?

Lawrence:
Damn straight. I always wanted to do that, man. And I think if I had a million dollars I could hook that up, cause chicks dig a dude with money.

Peter Gibbons:
Well, not all chicks.

Lawrence:
Well the kind of chicks that'd double up on a dude like me do.

Just thinking out loud here.  If the lock downs and all other efforts keep the number of deaths here in the US to reasonable levels, maybe just tens of thousands, should we institute a similar effort with lock down every year during flu season?

No, because the flu isn’t political. People don’t blame the president for flu deaths. Over 500 people die in the US every year from getting strangled by their own bed sheets, but there is no talk about banning bed sheets. Millions die each year in car accidents, but we still have cars. Some deaths are societally acceptable. Some are not.
