I really don't get the extent of the resistance.

I know a guy who's been wearing the same "single-use" disposable mask for nearly a month solid.

He says that he replaces these only when the elastic bands break.

His reasoning is as follows:

-- If he catches the virus, he wants to broadcast that it was despite wear-masking;

-- because these masks are all manufactured in China ("the ultimate insult," he says), he doesn't want them to profit through his repeated purchases; and

-- if he meets a self-righteous "mask-Karen," he wants to admit his protocol to see the reaction.

As has been noted before, COVID can spread to animals - most notably so far minks/ferrets and cats being at highest risk and a few cases in dogs. For minks the risk was so great mass culls have been undertaken. Apparently though what hadn't been known before was if COVID could mutate within a ferret and then spread back into humans. Well, apparently it can and scientists seemed to note there would be a risk here of things becoming even more out of control and the mutated changes were so concerning this would damage the effectiveness of any potential vaccination. Denmark is going to kill off their entire mink population as a result and hopes this will stop the outward spread of a new version of COVID that doesn't seem to respond to antibodies. Really quite sad, I wonder if the end result will be the extinction of this species..

Kaare Molbak, Denmark’s top epidemiologist, warned that in the “worst-case scenario, the pandemic will restart, this time in Denmark”.

Quote

Magnus Heunicke, health minister, said the virus mutations had been found at five different mink farms. The people who had the new form of the virus were not severely ill but they did not respond positively to antibodies, he said.

MD back in the "red zone" apparently. Infections on a big upward trend, deaths too (once again hitting nursing homes). I think it will only get worse as we head into the holidays. Going for a pantry restock today before the panic buying restarts, this week was the first time in months I have laid eyes on Clorox and Lysol.

I was looking at some of the data we have at work (for Colorado). The number of infections is higher now than in the spring, but the death rate currently is about 1/3 of what it was back then. Probably several factors involved, but people do seem to be getting treated earlier, and I think also the fact that the most vulnerable groups like nursing home residents were disproportionately affected early in the spring and they have been doing much more to keep those groups safe now.

I think there is more PPE available too.

Yeah I think basically an accumulation of all the ways people have learned to mitigate exposure. I didn't mention masks because it always seems to trigger a few people, and everyone is already stressed.

I guess I would caution there are still people getting severe illness too, so I don't want to minimize anything. I've seen people a lot younger than me in ICU for weeks and finally passing away and nothing seems to help.

Yes it's flu season now and allergies are up again too.  People still get normal colds.   Heck I need new glasses so I've been getting headaches from that, plus clenching my jaw more than normal.  Gotta see a dentist and I'm not particularly excited about it, but at least at the end of this I'll have straighter teeth?

It's funny (not like haha funny, but weird funny) because the middle aged people mostly seem to keep their distance.  There are more old people that get in my face (older men mostly because they can't hear) and young men.  Granted in my job I see probably 80% men anyhow.  My friend working in the fitness industry is having a heck of a time. :( She's got the health department up her butt and has had to cut staff.

In my area we are seeing shortages of toilet paper and paper towels.  Went out last night and got TP at Costco but they were running very low, and they were out of paper towels.  Did find some poorer quality paper towels at Walmart this am.   Now trying to think ahead at what else I should buy before more shortages hit.

On another note I see the FDA has approved the first treatment for COVID, remdesivir.

I expect we are going to have some sort of lockdown, either on the state level here in CA (which is sort of doing okay) or on a national level after the inauguration in January. Plenty of toilet paper here at the moment, as well as Lysol wipes, Method and Mrs Meyers cleaning supplies (which is what I use), pasta, flour, rice, etc. I might start stocking up to avoid the rush. The worst that comes of it is that I have a lot of toilet paper!

People should really try bidets. My first experience with them was when I worked at Googleplex, since then have been a fan. Saves so much tp.
