Studies Point To Big Drop In COVID-19 Death Rates

"The people who are getting hospitalized now tend to be much younger, tend to have fewer other diseases and tend to be less frail than people who were hospitalized in the early days of the epidemic," Horwitz says.

So have death rates dropped because of improvements in treatments? Or is it because of the change in who's getting sick?

To find out, Horwitz and her colleagues looked at more than 5,000 hospitalizations in the NYU Langone Health system between March and August. They adjusted for factors including age and other diseases, such as diabetes, to rule out the possibility that the numbers had dropped only because younger, healthier people were getting diagnosed. They found that death rates dropped for all groups, even older patients by 18 percentage points on average.

Four newborn babies die in one month at an Australian hospital

Babies who require such treatment are usually transferred to Melbourne - something that hasn't been possible amid COVID-19 and Australia's state border restrictions.

"How many more deaths of babies and young children will staff be forced to endure before the Minister for Health [Stephen Wade] cuts across this unnecessary procrastination?

Brooklyn Kosher Café Cited for Keeping Doors Open

The Orthodox Jewish news site Vos Iz Neias reported that the undercover inspector had walked into the café and asked the owner, identified as Mike, if he could sit down and eat. Mike told him that the café wasn’t open for dine-in, and then the alleged inspector issued the summons for a January court date.

New York City Councilman Chaim Deutsch told Vos Iz Neias that he looked at a copy of the summons, and it stated that the café was cited for not keeping “the door closed for pedestrian traffic.” Deutsch said he asked Mayor Bill de Blasio and the city’s Department of Health; the Department of Health said they would review the regulations and get back to him. Since then, neither the department nor de Blasio have gotten back to him.

“It is unconscionable that the city and state are continuing to harass small business owners, already struggling to survive due to the COVID shutdowns,” Deutsch said. “Thousands of businesses have been forced to permanently shut their doors, and many others are on the brink. Instead of the local government directing resources to support these businesses, they are instead pursuing bogus violations and petty fines against them. Shameful and despicable behavior from local agencies.”

I was down in Key West last night to check and see what was happening for the "cancelled" Fantasy Fest.  Many people came anyway as some had reservations that were not changeable.  Duval street wasn't closed off as usual for this event.  There was a decent crowd of people, just not what there normally would be for this special weekend.  Did get to see some boobies, and there were no open container rules (not sure there really ever is).  A few places doing body painting art.  Social distancing?  NO.  Wearing of masks?  Probably 5% or less.  We just cruised around a little bit and the wife insisted we keep the windows closed!  Was a beautiful night however, 82 degrees at 8:00 pm.  After that we stopped at a fast food joint to get a quick bite but had to eat it outside on the steps as they were not letting anyone eat inside.  This was not in old town where the "festivities" were happening.

I started out with nothing, and I still have most of it.

I went bald but I kept my comb.  I just couldn't part with it.

Saw this even in my practice.  Had a guy that we saw for a checkup and cleaning back in February.  He said his tongue was getting scratched by a tooth and I adjusted and smoothed what we thought was the problem tooth with instructions to return if it did not get better.  Didn't see him again until August because of the COVID scare, and when I looked I knew he had a problem.  Sent him off for a biopsy and it came back as squamous cell carcinoma.  Sadly he has lost more of his tongue than he should have, and is now likely having chemo or radiation.  I have not heard back from the surgeon yet.

Ah damn. Age range / any habits that might increase the chances of it.. like, dip, beer?

If, in the odd chance, you're trying to subconsciously guilt me for missing my 6 month dentist appointment, it's working. 😐

Guy is in his late 60's and is a personal trainer.  Healthy and not a smoker, although not sure if he has smoked in the past.  Usually see these in people that are smokers and consume a fair amount of alcohol.

Third ambulance in a month came this weekend to our neighborhood and took away our neighbor who sadly passed. He seemed fairly hunkered down these past months and is usually a loner, but had been going out of late without a mask and attending local gatherings. *sigh* We are losing long-time members of our community fast. The numbers in town had stabilized for a while, but now they are increasing every day.

Was there a couple of weeks back for a couple of days.  The only open container rule I am aware of is it has to be plastic.

Masks were being used in the stores, but only about 1-2% wore them on the streets.

Where I am it is unusual to see people wear them outside, well maybe if you are going from one place to another.

Now with it getting cold it will be more difficult to tell.

As it should be.  Glad I don't live in a place where people are being "mandated" to wear them in their homes, even if only family is present.  Talk about asinine, especially when you see instances of one family member (particularly spouses) who test positive, but the other doesn't catch it.  Pretty similar to many other diseases with which we have come to terms.

Nearly two months after COVID spike began, few Midwestern hospitals facing feared surge of patients

In Midwest, nearly eight weeks of spiking cases haven't overwhelmed hospitals

Concerns about a crush of COVID patients were raised anew in early September, when many Midwestern states began seeing significant rises in the numbers of confirmed coronavirus infections.

Yet state-level data indicate that, with the exception of some facilities, most hospitals in that region remain below capacity, even as average COVID cases have soared far above the numbers seen over the summer.

In Iowa, for instance, the state has around 3,100 hospital beds available, with a little over 60% of statewide capacity currently being utilized. Yet the state's coronavirus dashboard says just 12% of total statewide inpatients — 564 as of Wednesday afternoon — were infected with COVID-19, meaning COVID inpatients could theoretically triple there without overwhelming state capacity.

A similar ratio is reported in Nebraska, where about 12% of its hospital inpatients — 436 of 3175 — are COVID-positive. Nebraska is currently filling about 69% of its hospital beds, with a slightly lower occupancy rate in intensive care units.

Both states are either just below or just above the average U.S hospital occupancy rate in 2015, about 65% according to CDC statistics.
