I know.  Been saying it for months.  99% of people have NO IDEA how to properly wear/handle a mask.  And even now, I don't... I wear the same mask until it is visibly dirty, then toss it out and don a new one.  But my last mask lasted probably three weeks.  All the paper surgical masks really do is leave a trail of vapors behind me instead of in front of me.  :)

I have about four masks I keep in the car and rotate them as needed.  I usually keep them until they either look really dirty, or I break an ear loop.

Pretty much the same here.  In the beginning, we would get home, step out of the vehicle, and spray both masks with lysol disinfectant, then hang them back in the car to dry for next use.  That was mostly because masks weren't available to purchase.  Now, it's because I don't want to waste any more money on them.

I imagine it would be a bit different if I had to wear one for 8+ hours a day at work, but in that case companies usually provide new masks regularly.

Yeah, I think if I had to wear one all day, I'd opt to also wear a SCBA tank on my back to provide fresh air.  Seems worth the trade-off.

Let me tell you about it...  Actually you get used to it and it just seems normal.  Keeping a supply of masks for work is still a challenge.

Masks used to be cheap, maybe 10 cents each or less.  Since COVID the price has sky rocketed and when I buy they limit me to just a hand full of boxes at a time.  Same now with gloves as I learned yesterday.

Hey man, if it helps your business, I can send you a bunch of masks.  Barely used...

LOL

Several months ago I bought a simple UV sterilizing unit.  Looks like a toaster oven with a couple of UV-C bulbs inside.  Many were using them to sterilize masks for reuse.  I tried it and noted that the masks had a terrible odor of ozone after treatment.  Another useless piece of junk to stick in the corner.

Guess I can sterilize my cell phone with it.

Gotta think outside the box, man.  I get that the masks don't smell good, so that's not gonna work.  But you can always toss your underwear in there.  Start saving on laundry soap to make up for the cost of the sterilizer!!

I remember seeing something like that in my dad's old barbershop.  You could soak your phone in that nice blue liquid they use for the combs.

The biggest irony of this entire debacle was that, when supplies of disposable masks FINALLY became available, they were from China, with prominent Chinese lettering amidst the English.

Wouldn't it be marvelous if Hunter Biden is profiting off these Chinese masks?

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

The Great Barrington Declaration

As infectious disease epidemiologists and public health scientists we have grave concerns about the damaging physical and mental health impacts of the prevailing COVID-19 policies, and recommend an approach we call Focused Protection.

Coming from both the left and right, and around the world, we have devoted our careers to protecting people. Current lockdown policies are producing devastating effects on short and long-term public health. The results (to name a few) include lower childhood vaccination rates, worsening cardiovascular disease outcomes, fewer cancer screenings and deteriorating mental health – leading to greater excess mortality in years to come, with the working class and younger members of society carrying the heaviest burden. Keeping students out of school is a grave injustice.

Keeping these measures in place until a vaccine is available will cause irreparable damage, with the underprivileged disproportionately harmed.

Fortunately, our understanding of the virus is growing. We know that vulnerability to death from COVID-19 is more than a thousand-fold higher in the old and infirm than the young. Indeed, for children, COVID-19 is less dangerous than many other harms, including influenza.

As immunity builds in the population, the risk of infection to all – including the vulnerable – falls. We know that all populations will eventually reach herd immunity – i.e.  the point at which the rate of new infections is stable – and that this can be assisted by (but is not dependent upon) a vaccine. Our goal should therefore be to minimize mortality and social harm until we reach herd immunity.

TOTAL U.S. DEATHS (ALL CAUSES):
2017 Total Deaths US: 2,813,503 (234,000/month)
https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/products/databriefs/db328.htm

2018 Total Deaths US: 2,839,205 (237,000/month)
https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/products/databriefs/db355.htm

2019 Total Deaths US: 2,855,000 (238,000/month)
https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/nvss/vsrr/provisional-tables.htm

2020 Total Deaths US (jan - week 9/26): 2,130,000 (236,000/month)
https://data.cdc.gov/NCHS/Weekly-Counts-of-Deaths-by-State-and-Select-Causes/muzy-jte6

If we extrapolate the data for 2020: 2,130,000 + (236,000/month x 3 for Cot-Dec) = 2,838,000 <assumption based on monthly avg>

2020: 2,838,000 (0.60% decrease over 2019)
2019: 2,855,000 (0.56% increase over 2018)
2018: 2,839,000 (0.89% increase over 2017)
2017: 2,814,000

Unless I am missing something in the data from the CDC, it really appears as though our deaths in the US hasn't changed all that much each year, and 2020 has the potential to drop back to 2018 levels.

The US should expect 20,000 more coronavirus deaths by the end of the month, former CDC director says

https://www.cnn.com/2020/10/11/health/us-coronavirus-sunday/index.html

The month prior to the election?  Coincidence????

(219,695 deaths to date, for reference)

The average daily deaths for 1-10 Oct is 720.8.  In order to see 20,000 more, we would need to see that average jump to ~953 per day.  Let's keep an eye out.
