Comorbidities

Table 3 shows the types of health conditions and contributing causes mentioned in conjunction with deaths involving coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). For 6% of the deaths, COVID-19 was the only cause mentioned. For deaths with conditions or causes in addition to COVID-19, on average, there were 2.6 additional conditions or causes per death. The number of deaths with each condition or cause is shown for all deaths and by age groups. For data on comorbidities,

So am I reading this right, that only 6% of the 187,000 deaths (11,220) were ONLY from covid?  And that the rest had at least 2.6 OTHER causes?

And of those 6%, how many of them may have had an issue nobody knew about...

Some of the other causes look like they are directly derived from having Covid-19. Causes like respiratory failure, sepsis, respiratory arrest, adult respiratory distress syndrome, renal failure are difficult to isolate from the primary cause since those are all part of the pathogenesis of Covid-19. Many of the other look like the known risk factors - obesity, heart disease, respiratory disease, cancer.

I would guess the 6% represents the number of deaths where they didn't look for and/or take the time to list co-morbidities. Almost everyone who died of Covid-19 would have at least one of the causes in that first group I listed.

And what about obesity, heart disease, cancer, etc. that were all pre-existing conditions that had nothing to do with covid (at least until covid weakened the body enough for the underlying conditions to cause death, either alone or in conjunction)?  I'm guessing there is no way to really separate them?

I was looking to see if the data sortable, but I couldn't really get anywhere.

Can't read behind the NYT paywall.  But as Burnt alludes to, this is nothing new.  Saw articles like this weeks or a month ago.  Also posted up some stuff about the tests in Florida from July-August where several labs were showing 100% positive results on thousands of testees.  Statistically impossible, financially profitable.  But of course, a particular few tried to shut me down and say it wasn't possible.

We report detected, not detected and indeterminate. It’s not that hard to correlate the numbers with the clinical picture. Indeterminate will either be very early in the infection where viral levels are low, or very late when recovery is already underway, and in rare cases something else interfering with the test. For indeterminate results, the physician will then decide if they need another test done. Usually they do.
