If the mink aren't dying from covid, and they are to be slaughtered anyway for their pelts... why bother destroying them?  Just wear a mask & gloves while caring for them.

More importantly... WHY aren't the mink dying from covid?

   Why is that important?

I read the story and it did not say no minks were getting sick or dying, unless I missed something. It only spoke to infections and really did not comment on the symptoms of the humans either.

. I would guess if they can get infected they can die, be sick or be asymptomatic, just a hunch

I'm not a vet mind you, but ethically we have a responsibility to not let an animal suffer. The way I understand it, this disease can be easily identified in animals but the treatment options are nada. Even the big cats at the zoo had problems and I'm not sure if they have fully recovered yet without expensive treatments. We also aren't exactly sure how contagious the animal would be after death, but I certainly know it wouldn't be appropriate in other situations to slaughter an animal and use their products if ill with other diseases. Morgues and such have been having to take special care in protocols because of the infectious nature. While the disease doesn't seem to be highly transmissible to dogs yet (though there have been cases) in cats it's very possible and apparently it's very highly contagious in ferret species which does not have good outcomes. I do not think it would be prudent to utilize the pelts of a highly contagious animal. Ferrets/minks can contract a coronavirus species separate from COVID the prognosis is always bad - so it is likely these mink would be suffering.

I believe it is usually fatal in this species and a bad way to go... I can ask my vet in a couple weeks if you'd like. The little man has to get his stitches out then.

Any are possible, but not really important. Viruses don't always affect animals the same way as humans. I would say the important thing is minks and other animals can catch it, so they could serve as a reservoir for future outbreaks.

Probably worst when they don't show symptoms. That's why H7N9 is the strain of bird flu they worry about most. It causes no significant symptoms in the birds.

Republicans eye sweeping shield from coronavirus liability

Awesome. We are now doing something to stop this terrible pandemic

As I said in an earlier post, risk management and exposure are why so many companies are requiring masks.

Instant Senate filibuster, doesn't pass. If by some miracle it did, the House does nothing.

Getting people back to work, even in a safe manner, isn't the goal, it's to disrupt the economy in 2020 and inflict as much damage to the US to get the bad orange man.

Anyone who is in the medical profession, or has a modicum of ability to think outside the box would think that perhaps them contracting the virus, but not dying from it, might lead medical researchers to ascertain why whey don't die from it in an attempt to apply it to humans, either thru a vaccine or something genetic.  Any progress in overcoming the virus would be a good thing.

Ironically, a friend recently told me that one of HIS friends, who claimed covid was a hoax, died from it.  If that isn't poetic justice, IDK what is...

Well I think for minks its hopeless, but Llamas on the other hand? They've got research going there. https://www.nih.gov/news-events/nih-research-matters/llama-antibody-engineered-block-coronavirus

Many animals don't die from it, including the bats in which it is endemic. They already know many of the differences behind that. Animals have different cell receptors in different numbers and on different cells than humans. It's not something that can be replicated. Most medical professionals understand that viruses will affect different species in different ways.

So why the cull?

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”
