Thought I'd check in on this thread to see what the general consensus was on COVID-19 especially with rising cases/deaths in the US but this whole topic has just become derailed...

Thoughts from an ICU nurse in the UK. We are pretty much empty in our units but bracing ourselves for another hit, especially towards the winter period. I find it "amusing" that we are pretty much opening up everywhere yet somehow isolating one little town that's a hotspot... Ironic, much? I can see that being a trend to how our government will handle these hotspots to restart the economy. Although they have bumbled through this whole situation, no point in expecting any true leadership and consistency now.

The US just seems crazy. I actually visited for 4 weeks recently and luckily it's been fine where my husband is (rural) but they are starting to slowly increase. Glad they have Gov Beshear reigning it in to limit cases and most importantly, deaths that can be avoided.

I have quarantined as per government protocol on my return to the UK and tested negative. Yet, apparently some celebrities can bypass this requirement... Why, I have no idea. I guess our government thinks they are more essential than the people they were clapping for and calling heroes a little while back.

My car is getting work done at a dealership collision place vs local. The place has fixed our friends truck twice after being totalled both times (once it was on it's side after driving over a camry and other time parked and rear ended by a distracted driver) and it looks like it's never been in an accident.

Driving over a camry. You almost made spit tea lol

Thank you for the update on what's going on over there. My fiance recently decided against going back for a visit, mostly because we are in a hotspot in this county, and even if he doesn't have symptoms doesn't mean he isn't asymptomatic. Ultimately it was the thought of going back and possibly getting someone ill over there that did it for him. (Also I can be persuasive. :D)

What I have heard from my friends/family over there is that a lot of people are just flouting quarantine, that it's not enforced and it's being treated like a joke. Glad to hear you're safe and well after a visit over here!

I'll say.  Had a friend, an eastern European "mechanic" drive down to the Keys to spend the 4th with us.  He drove his Prius that he bought used several years ago.  I've never been a big fan of the Prius, probably because I always get stuck behind one doing 10 mph under the limit.  We took his car to the bait shop and I asked how many miles he had on it.  He hit a button and up on the dash I see 248,000+ miles.  Couldn't believe it.

Camry hybrid I used to own my daughter now has.  Almost 150,000 miles and still going strong.

Toyota hybrids usually have a higher reliability rate than non hybrids.  If you go to the big city you see so many hybrid Taxis.

I personally think that now that most of the other  Toyota models have hybrids at very close to the same price points, the Prius does not make much sense to me. Its more of a liberal statement car.

The Corolla Hybrid  gets around 52 mpg at around 25k. I sold everyone we got but for some reason the pipeline dried up.

The MSM makes it seem worse here than it really is, IMO.  Talking to friends who deal with the public on a daily basis here in FL (police, travel agent, hair salon folk) there are a lot of cases of people signing up for testing, but leaving without being tested due to long lines, yet being notified days later they are positive.  Also, the death rate continues to decline,  probably due to healthier, younger folk (combined with earlier detection and improved treatment protocol) being positive now, but I think that's a good thing.

I was very much conflicted whether to go to the US or not but when I did decide to go it's when things were actually slowly starting to slow down, even in the US. I had booked to visit my husband for 4 weeks before COVID-19 was even known. My flights got changed a few times but ultimately because I had an American spouse I could travel. He thankfully does not live in a hotspot and I was willing to quarantine on my return. We also stayed home together when I first landed there which cleared my conscious on any potential spreading to those around me and his vulnerable family members (he lives alone).

I was actually forced to take either unpaid leave or annual leave for those 2 weeks despite my managers knowing (this was a strict rule however due to government ruling as the US is such a red flag to travel to). As it's pretty obvious how strongly I feel regarding COVID-19 and the health of the people, I was strictly quarantining at home and only ventured out once safe (tested negative on the later days). I can see how it's difficult to ensure it being done... I love our countries like South Korea have given those admitted to the countey- quarantine packs, filled with food and essentials... Seems like a pretty obvious idea.. but no, let's just give vouchers off to people dining out despite how vulnerable they are to this virus, in the name of boosting the economy.

I am so glad I got to see the husband though. Next time will be when the visa comes through as I barely have anymore annual leave left.

Hope you guys are able to safely visit eachother soon. I know it's not an easy decision to make.

Definitely agree that early detection helps especially regarding spread of the virus. I think ICU capacities are also a good indication of how bad it is. Where my husband lives- there's far too many vulnerable people, those who are elderly and with co-morbities so once there's an opening, it is sort of a ticking time bomb. Luckily being so spread out and limited contact helps.

At the airports I saw many people with visors and effective masks yet they were touching their faces, fixing it etc. Also poor practice regarding gloves and touching everything etc. Don't get me wrong, I'm of the mentality that there is only so much you can do and it is what it is but I sure as hell will limit catching and spreading it if I can, and advocate for that as well.

Being back in the UK reminds me of being in the US, with wearing masks and keeping distance. It feels like second nature now, and I have hand gel with me. I guess it helps being a nurse though to understand routes of transmission properly. Glad it feels safe where you are.

Oh, don't feel too bad for us -- we live together! :) He is here on an L1, so he can come and go, but he would need to quarantine outside the US on his way back in from the UK. It was that and the quarantine on the other side that weighted it. We're the lucky ones -- we get to be together. Even if being in close proximity for the past 4 months has made for a lot of togetherness (until this week he was only working from home, and he only went into his mostly empty office because of construction nearby), I am very grateful. He really wanted to see his daughter, whose birthday is next week, but in the end there were too many variables.

Lol.

He drives an f350 crew cab diesel that's lifted on 37s.  He had a green and the camry turned in front of him. You could see the crunch over the hood like a damn monster truck rally. Cop on scene saw the whole thing. But since there was a person buddy drove off the camry (saving that driver's life) and landed on his side. While the truck was fixed, buddy will have migraines for the rest of his life and is on disability combined with his other injuries over his service career. (He was active duty at the time.) All because an older man cant figure out that a flashing yellow arrow means yield.

It's like the people who refuse to wear masks in businesses or where social distancing is impossible. If you think about yourself and your needs only, you may miss that big truck coming at your face and almost get run over.

Im very much a pro-choice body autonomy type of person. You do have the right to not wear a mask.  But that doesnt mean you have the right to shop in stores or eat out.  Maybe delivery will be your new best friend? Or drive up pick up? Even my work offers curbside pick up if you ask and I sell automotive parts. So I cant see my family.  Right now it's really hard knowing I cant see my kiddo for the foreseeable future.

Luckily, I haven't seen too much of the Rambos refusing to wear a mask in stores.  I think store managers have done fairly well with that, asking folks to leave if they aren't wearing one.  Even when eating out, people wear them from the door to the table, then take them off. (Or at the very least, wear them as they walk thru the door).

Actually one of the guys who works in my local brewery was going spare with the hassles he has had, we have some sort of EO in CO but it is unenforceable and no penalties. The Offie and Supermarket have had strict requirements for a very long time.

If the mink aren't dying from covid, and they are to be slaughtered anyway for their pelts... why bother destroying them?  Just wear a mask & gloves while caring for them.

More importantly... WHY aren't the mink dying from covid?

Please logic not allowed.
