I love all the talk of FL, GA, TX and AZ and Fauci saying they opened too fast.  How does the esteemed Dr. explain CA, WA, and MI?

We opened too quickly, people started gathering more (not just protests which coincided with opening up), young people think they're invincible. People let down their guard. That's the consensus here right now. Not everywhere in CA but I think this county is heading towards lockdown again.

To be honest I am not sure, the so called shut down helped a lot. I think the problem is everyone is now pretending nothing is wrong, taking no precautions of any kind. A buffet just reopned here which is totally mind boggling,  considering the unprecedented rise in cases.

The deaths and hospitalizations,  which are lagging indicators are starting to trend up.

Its amazing that as soon as cases started rIsing people took to FB, to pronounce because deaths arent up immediately the numbers are fake.

Several hospitals here are full and ICUs are near capcity.. of course several are posting the hospital ICU numbers are not real, becuse not everyone in ICU is a covid patient.

People are giving the middle finger to any precaution in the  name of patriotism. How can so many Americans be so misguided.

My employer went back to business as usual 3 days before the order was lifted. Zero precautions.  I promise you its not going to be such a badge of honor to proclaim this a hoax when their whole family gets it.

I think we had an opportunity during the shutdown to set up systems as other countries did -- contact tracing, making more PPE, an education campaign for hygiene/social distancing/mask-wearing -- and we didn't do enough. Failure at every level of government. My mom's family is from back east, western CT/eastern RI, and when this started we were so terrified for them, especially my Grandma who's in her 80s. And they looked to us in CA and thought we were doing great. But both those states handled their lockdowns well and worked hard to flatten the curve. Now they are two of the only "success" stories out there and we're probably going back to lockdown soon. My Grandma is looking forward to getting back to her normal life soon out there and we're going backwards. And it's not like they didn't have political demonstrations out there either -- but people wore masks because they knew it would be difficult to socially distance. (My Aunt Lisa sends me pics all the time of protesters out there all wearing masks and I'm sure she's being smug about it -- "This is how to do it!" 🙄)

Here in TX, Abbott just threatened lockdown again unless people wear their face-diapers.

With Abbott, who needs Cuomo?

eastern RI

Didn't think that RI was big enough to have an "eastern" or any other division.

More PPE equipment?  Not sure how much more we could have done. We had daily briefings on latest procedures. we had CDC guidlines and procedures,  Federal guidelines,  state guidelines  Yes we changed recommendations as we gained understanding.  This virus is awful. Your talking points are trying to fit a narrative

I meant manufacturing more PPE for our healthcare professionals. Sorry if I didn't make that clear. I'm not trying to fit any other narrative than this virus is awful, which you agree with.

And we have sucked at contact tracing, which is a necessity for controlling the virus, as other countries which have successfully controlled it have show.

And by better education, I mean just because we had all the guidelines and procedures, that doesn't mean that people were paying attention. I mean, let's be real, Nature Boy: you and I pay very close attention to what's going on, but as hard as it is to believe, we're the exception, not the rule. And the education campaigns could have been improved to reach people in ways that resonated better -- instead we have too many "sexy" stories about masks making you sick, or Bill Gates and Warren Buffett and Jeff Bezos coming to inject you with a mark of the beast vaccine (and something something 5G towers), or how wearing a mask is a sign of weakness, or that social distancing is hogwash. Yes, it's all dumb! But they are more "fun" than the banality that being safe and cautious works more often than not.

I think we're actually arguing along the same lines. :)

We are in NYC right now(TWA hotel waiting for our flight in the morning) and I have to say I was pretty surprised by how lax people here seem to be about everything. Seen plenty of people without masks etc, and they don't seem to follow proper social distancing. This is a very stark contrast from VT, which, despite the fact we have the lowest number of active cases in the country and the 4th lowest number of cases per 1 mil, people are hyper aware of their surroundings(chicken and egg, I guess). We also stopped by a restaurant on our way in, in Albany, NY, and there again people seemed very lax, and it was also very full...alot more people than you see in VT anywhere, really.

What a kwinkydink!! I just checked into my room at the TWA hotel as well.  Smaller than I imagined they would be.  Almost... tiny.

Just talked to a guy who has been in 9 different countries all over Europe in the last 2 months.  Italy three times.  In night clubs with people dancing like normal.  Eating out, no one wearing masks.  He said he was the only American he saw in all those places.  He also said he got lots of questions about why one of the greatest nations on earth had shut down like we did.  Said the difference was night and day.

Not sure to where in NY you were referring, but at JFK airport, I saw 2 other besides me without a mask out of about 1,000 peeps.

That happens here too, but because they know better and it's still just a flu, despite the numbers and deaths.

It's also just a piece of cloth or paper, I don't get why people can't just wear it. I have to wear it all day at work, it's completely absurd to see people complain about having to wear it for a couple of hours at most and that's only because they choose to go to a mall.

They made them mandatory today, and I'm super happy about it. It kind of drives down the risk that I'll catch it immensely. I really don't want to end up in a situation where I'll catch it, especially now that there's finally some movement at the embassies.

No. They help protect others. I really don't see the point in wearing them if we're the only ones wearing them because, while us wearing them protects others, it's not going to actually keep anyone safe, including us, if 85% of the people we see on a daily basis refuses to wear one.

We still wore them anyway, because we're not #######, but it felt sort of pointless when no almost no one else wore them.
