@Nature Boy 2.0 I do believe it was people wanting to cause trouble and looting in the process. They were using these protests as backdrop to that in order to loot from stores

I agree with you totally.  I was being sarcastic.  Anyone burning down a police station is looking to cause problems,  regardless of motivation 😃

Black Lives Matter protests haven't led to COVID-19 spikes. It may be due to people staying home.

Our hospitalizations have also increased for the second day. They aren't going into the ICU, but holding in acute care. Perhaps this is because we are skewing younger cases or perhaps it's because we're having better treatment options. Big outbreaks from MD to DE at the beaches so bad that businesses are choosing to close again.

I have been hearing something like 20% of Covid hospitalizations in TX were for things not actually related to Covid.  My understanding is that everyone going to a hospital for an elective procedure that requires a stay is tested, and if they come back positive, they are counted as a Covid hospitalization even if they are an orthopedic, cardiac patient etc..  The other thing I am curious about is hospitals have to have some level of admittance to either cover their cost in the case of a non-profit, or at least turn a profit for those with a more capitalistic bent.  I don’t know what that level is, but I assume it is greater than 50% and probably close to 75% capacity.

That is incorrect. The Covid-19 test is done 48-72 hours prior to surgery and patients are required to self quarantine at home until the surgery date. If the test comes back positive, the surgery is cancelled and the patient is informed of the result and given the same instruction's as anyone else who has a positive outpatient Covid test. That is, to monitor symptoms, quarantine, and seek medical care if severe symptoms occur.

That is 100% correct and what happens at the hospital practice my sister is with. She gets tests set up for patients all the time. On occasion they get some people that kick up a fuss about having it done, and still others that refuse to drive to a location where the 48-72hr test is provided. One person insisted on going to a different location where the test would take over a week for results still, which effectively cancelled his elective procedure. You are certainly not getting into a hospital or even outpatient setting for an elective without having confirmed results in hand.

Now we did have a case where a patient that was negative did have extensive surgery in the hospital. While recovering over the next week, they fell ill and were confirmed positive. Assumed the patient got it from hospital staff while recovering.

Yeah, I thought it might be something like that as I could not find any sources backing up the claim I heard.  However, you did not answer my second question, what is the break even admittance rate for hospitals?

It's one of the risks that was added to the waiver. They actually recommend 72 hours because 48 hours is risks the test results not coming back in time and having to reschedule the surgery. The first day we resumed elective surgeries they were ordering the test 24 hours prior, and they had to cancel every procedure that day because the tests were not back.

They also do the standard temperature screening on the day of surgery and masks are required to the extent possible. The are trying hard to not have a positive patient slip through and risk exposing all the other patients having surgery that day. It's still a risk though.
