I've was reviewing a report of a few hundred antibody test results we got back this week, and we only had 4 results come back as 'detected'. Either the methodology sucks, or there are a lot of people have not yet been exposed to this. I think we will really see where we are at with all this when kids start going back to school.

Our daughter's charter school asked if we wanted the kids to wear masks at school when they go back in late August. Already knew that parents would say no.

All I could do is laugh.

Totally useless.

On the bright side, she'll be thrilled to be back around other kids. Can tell that being stuck at home has made her depressed. Look forward to it.

Both of these can be true. Regional capacity could be challenged in some areas, while the state has capacity overall.

The trend seems to be younger people getting infected now (due to being back out and getting exposed), so more positive cases overall in some areas, but not near as many hospitalizations as there were in the earlier stages when the mean age of people contracting the illness was higher.

Yup thats us. Im not from here originally but Im told things havent changed much here in the last few decades. Its a very family friendly vacation destination. Beach, fishing, ice cream shops- no nightlife! Everything closes by 9 or 10.

I think technically we are the south but we are the northernest south you can be. We are also kind of small- 39,000 population. I would encourage anyone looking at the number stats to dig a little deeper and really understand how they are calculating them. For example our county is listed officially at 27 cases (state health and human services). But the county is listing it at 46 (27 residents and 19 non residents). This means 19 people came here on vacation and were tested here and found to have the virus. When someone gets the test its recorded to where there permanent address is based on their ID- which is not very helpful for tracking the spread.

I honestly can not understand why people are insisting on vacation traveling right now. But the biggest problem is those who are traveling for vacation have this mentality that they are 'on vacation' so there are no rules! People are tired of being in quarantine and wearing masks so they take a vacation and dont want to wear them. They want to eat at restaurants and assemble into groups. So we are in a situation where those who are conservative and afraid of community spread (those who would wear a mask) are simply not coming on vacation. Those who are coming are the ones who either dont believe in community spread or they do but they just dont care cause vacation means you dont follow rules.

Breaking down our numbers this week:

Saturday, June 20, 2020

Female Non-resident 18-24 years of age, transferred isolation to home county
Male Non-resident 17- years of age, transferred isolation to home county

Thursday, June 18, 2020

Female Non-resident 18-24 years of age, isolating in Dare County
Wednesday, June 17, 2020

Female Non-resident 25-49 years of age, transferred isolation to home county

Tuesday, June 16, 2020

Female Resident 25-49 years of age, recovering in home isolation
Female Resident 65+ years of age, recovering in home isolation
Male Resident 17- years of age, recovering in home isolation
 Monday, June 15, 2020

Female Non-resident 50-64 years of age, transferred to home county
Male Non-resident 18-24 years of age, transferred to home county
Male Non-resident 18-24 years of age, transferred to home county
Male Non-resident 18-24 years of age, transferred to home county
Sunday, June 14, 2020

Female Non-resident 18-24 years of age, transferred to home county
Male Resident 65+ years of age, recovering in home isolation

Due to the this the county has just issued a mandatory mask requirement. Will have to see if it helps.

Masks.  What a joke.

I'm sorry you think masks are a joke. I am frankly annoyed at irresponsible selfish people that can't be bothered to put one on. But I shouldn't be surprised, people can't even dress themselves properly to go to a store.

Masks are only a virtue signaling device, given that MAYBE 0.00001% of the population use them properly.  They do nothing to control the spread of disease, they just make some people feel better.

Unless you are throwing away masks every time you take them off, one for every public encounter,  and washing thoroughly EVERY TIME you touch your mask...  maybe you are.  99% of the populations isn't.

Spot on. People prefer a false sense of security (would prefer a comforting lie than the cold hard truth), want irrationality catered to. Passable for personal relationships (we all have our moments of irrationality, some more than others), ridiculously terrible for public policy.

I was okay with my (pregnant) wife wearing a mask, and my kids, in the few times they had to go out anywhere, but these were medical masks given to us by a family friend after my wife was tested for the virus following a mandatory self-isolation period (we've had several tests done now and all negative every time), and (far more importantly) we emphasized key behaviors (about coughing/sneezing, and touching faces, wearing (normal, for me, stylish shop) gloves to help curb behaviors everyone but wife has). I've never once wore a mask outside, I've had some shopping trips at Costco, Walmart, etc. that lasted hours. I didn't give two figs when it made others give me a second (or dirty) look, I'm not into behavior compliance just because it makes the irrational feel good.

When I'm back with the family again shortly, will be going on a vacation. The time for being nice to paranoia and placating irrationality is beyond over. If people want to hole themselves up, power to them. If they want to jump in a BLM protest/riot or go to a Trump rally, power to them. I don't prefer either, but we're definitely done with the heightened "conservative" placating. Now it's just normal life again, with the usual precautions.

I agree with you $110%.  I wear a mask to protect other people.  But other people are too rude and selfish to wear a mask to protect me.

I would rather have an idiot wearing a mask pass me by than an idiot that is coughing all over me and everyone else.

Great post and I totally agree with you.  Palm Beach County is voting next week whether or not to make masks mandatory in public.  I hope they do.  Other counties in Florida have already done this.

Denver has had a mandatory mask order in place since things opened up. People have been generally compliant and our rates of infection seem to have stayed low, even with all the outdoor recreation and tourism picking up. We have also had very low rates of staff getting sick at the hospital where I work.

I've done a 180 on masks. It may not have looked like they would help at first, and there may not be a strong scientific reason to show that they would stop viral transmission, but the empirical evidence is certainly there. I think they are helping prevent asymptomatic people from spreading it to others.
