It's with shock and happiness that I report I am now a CITIZEN of the USA. My oath ceremony took place in NYC today (Federal Plaza). They did say however that this was going to be the "last ceremony until further notice" (at that location) in reference to the coronavirus situation. The ceremony for 150 people was abbreviated (much shorter than usual) and no friends/family were allowed in the room. So while it's not clear what is going to be happen in the weeks ahead with regards to oath ceremonies at Federal Plaza (Manhattan), today was a good test run for how to successfully conduct a modified oath ceremony which still ticks all the boxes!  I am hopeful they will find a way to keep ceremonies going without cancelling or delaying them outright - at least in that particular location.

That's seriously lucky. On friday the 13th. Congrats!

Thank you!

What is the usual capacity of that venue?

The court-based ceremonies and those typically held in large venues seem to be the ones most at risk of cancellation. In New York state, the indoor limit for those with seating under 500 is 50% of that (so 250). Or if the capacity is for 250, then the max that could participate is 125.

There are alternatives to cancellation (smaller groups, no guests/family etc) but it just depends on how willing individual field offices to keep things moving during the coronavirus outbreak...

I am fascinated by this statement:

Naturalization Oath Ceremonies

  • Attendance at oath ceremonies will be limited to candidates only to allow for social distancing.  An exception will be made for individuals requiring assistance or an interpreter.
  • The daily oath ceremony format will be modified and include only statutory requirements, yet will continue to honor the dignity of the occasion. Should a candidate wish to delay and participate in a full formal ceremony on a later date, the candidate should inform the interviewing officer.

My oath ceremony was 2 days ago (Friday the 13th) and it adhered to the principles outlined in that statement - abbreviated ceremony, no guests in the room...but the significance of the occasion was still acknowledged/honored.

The statement makes me hopeful that my wife and I will get our ceremony done but as already said, if it doesn't happen, it doesn't happen. As we're all seeing, this virus situation is day to day, minute to minute even.
