Colorado passes bill to replace Columbus Day with Cabrini Day

Colorado is one pen stroke away from abolishing Columbus Day.

The state legislature gave final passage Tuesday to a bill that would replace Columbus Day with a new state holiday, on the first Monday of October, in honor of Frances Xavier Cabrini.

It is believed that the proposed Cabrini Day would be the first paid state holiday recognizing a woman anywhere in this country.

The bill now just needs the governor’s signature to become law. He supports the bill and will sign it, a spokesman told The Denver Post.

I am happy the great state of Colorado was able to find a palatable person as a suitable person for having a holiday.  There are currently exactly 2 holidays that honor individuals . In my lifetime, we have removed Good Friday, Lincoln’s birthday, Washington’s Birthday, St Patrick’s day (holiday in Ma anyway) and replaced them with MLKs birthday, Presidents’ Day And whatever replaces Columbus Day. Sad state of affairs when only MLK and Jesus is deserved of a day to themselves. Will revisionist historians change those because of some new position of morality in future times; after all Jesus cavorted with prostitutes and MLK was a womanizer.

Three of the four removed holidays you listed were removed because employers didn't want to pay overtime. I don't see any revisionist history in that, unless you count the fact that employers would like to revise labor laws back to the 18th century.

I don't really care if we have holidays named after people or not. I celebrate the days I want to whether they are holidays or not. However I don't think we need to have one celebrating someone who is most famous nowadays for his acts of cruelty and oppression. Colorado is by no means the first state to stop observing Columbus day and won't be the last, but for anyone who feels the overwhelming need to honor Columbus with a special day, it is still a federal holiday.

My thoughts were more musings than anything else,  different perspectives lead to the replacement of authorities. I was not defending Columbus, don’t really care one way or the other truth be told.

you even mention this “someone who is nowadays most famous for” as a basis for revising the tradition of celebrating historical inaccuracy.

Womanizer?  Perhaps.  But he was one super smart kid.  Skipped first and last year of HS.  Entered college at 15. 11 years later, finished his PhD at the age of 26.  Pretty freaking amazing.

For Columbus day, sure. They didn't really revise history, they just picked and chose the parts they wanted to recognize in the past. There was a lot of pressure from people cognizant of his actions. I think there were better people we could have celebrated in the first place. I'm not sure why they picked him to have a special day.

I think it had to do with lobbying by Italian-Americans in the 20th century to have a day marking the "achievements" of one of their own. The holiday already existed but not as a federal holiday, more along the lines of St. Patrick's Day. That's my recollection of it.

Columbus day?  I don't really care.  I'm always working that day anyway.

For Colorado, I like the choice of Francis Cabrini. She was also Italian American and is the patron saint of immigrants. Also she managed to live her whole life without decimating the entire native population of a small island.

Cabrini

Wasn't Cabrini Green that ground-zero public-housing project in Chicago that one of the mayors (Jane Byrne?  other?) went to live in for a day, to prove a point?  This might've been back in the early '80s or some other such bygone era.  Relying purely on fuzzy memory here, and seeking verification.
