1918 brought a nightmarish flu epidemic to Iowa's Camp Dodge

Amidst the data and fears and hype surrounding the Wuhanvirus (a very current event), we can compare what happened at a military camp during the Spanish Flu.  Observations are welcome, especially from our veterans in terms of whether any parts of this could happen again today.  Am interested in the cover-up aspects, in that some think that the same is happening today with the Wuhanvirus.

   I've read many stories of mass graves from the 1918 flu epidemic. There was a story in National Geographic about it several years ago. I would be surprised if there were not more instances where things like this happened. 

 

  Medically we have a better understanding and ability to treat and isolate something like this nowadays, but it is still possible for something like this to spread fast and be difficult to treat. I remember reading about the Hantavirus outbreak where it was previously healthy young people being brought to ER with acute respiratory failure and there was just nothing they could do for them.

 

  I also think it would be harder to cover up now in places like the US. A hundred years ago, people were still buried out back in some places. It's hard to just disappear of the face of the earth now. People keep in touch with each other daily instead of taking weeks by letter. Deaths are registered. Someone would know and take it to the media.

Excellent observations, as usual.  I wonder whether cover-up ability would still be stronger in the military than in public venues.  Maybe one of our veterans here can weigh in.
