My DL is real id compliant and expires in 2025. I just received my US passport. Do i still need to update the Driver license office now or I can wait till its time for me to renew my license and that time i will let them know i am citizen?

I dont think they care, but might be wrong.

Your DL is valid so i think u r fine.

Maybe you need to update your status with the Social Security Administration office...

Congratulations on citizenship!

The Department of Motor Vehicles has no need for an update that you’re a citizen. For all intents and purposes DMV doesn’t care about the difference between citizen and permanent resident, only for voter registration which you can do on your own.

You need to update the Social Security Administration however.

Just another random guy from the internet with an opinion, although usually backed by data!

@Myrna87

I updated my citizenship with Social Security and the the Texas DPS. My reason for driver license was so I could do things online like renew license or change address. Prior to citizenship I had to go in person to show my immigration status every time. I did have to pay for a new license because they had to match the SAVE database and the name on my naturalization certificate, which was full spelled out name. My prior license had a middle initial because that’s what my greencard had.  You may not want to spend the money if you recently renewed.

Thank you everyone for your input. If i could renew license or change address online in future without visiting their office then i think its worth updating Texas Driving license office now. I will look into that.Do I need to bring all the documents like id proof address proof etc ? I have contacted Social security office already.

i don’t remember taking anything but my naturalization certificate. It wouldn’t hurt to take the whole list of things. They did ask me if it had been 2 weeks since my citizenship because it may not be recorded in the SAVE database. It had been about 8 days but my citizenship was confirmed in SAVE already.  I didn’t have to do vision test or new photo, but I did have to pay again because they were changing my name to match the database (and my certificate).  No guarantees you will have the same experience.
