U.S. stocks tumbled by more than 7% Thursday before recovering some losses, with Wall Street poised to extend its historically ugly sell-off, after President Donald Trump announced new plans intended to contain the human toll and economic impact of the worsening coronavirus outbreak that has whipsawed global markets.

Amid heightened market turmoil, the New York Federal Reserve stepped in midday Thursday and announced a major asset purchase program, offering $500 billion in three-month repo operations, an additional $500 billion in one-month operations and another at least $220 billion in operations with durations of two weeks or fewer. The New York Fed also said its securities purchases would be along a range of maturities, to match the composition of the Treasury market.

As of 8:05 p.m. ET, S&P 500 futures (ES=F) were down 128.5 points or 4.8%; Dow futures (YM=F) were down 1,041 points or 4.6%; and Nasdaq futures (NQ=F) were down 359.7 points or 4.5%. The moves suggest the three major indices would add to losses that plunged them into a bear market just days ago, or more than 20% below their recent highs.

Stock futures opened sharply lower Sunday evening, even after the Federal Reserve launched a massive monetary stimulus program — including cutting rates to effectively zero and unveiling plans for large-scale asset purchases.

New York (CNN Business)Mayhem has descended upon global financial markets. The Dow has suddenly crumbled to a three-year lows. Crude oil is in an epic tailspin. And central banks are racing to put out fires.

The damage on Wall Street might not nearly be done as authorities scramble to stop the spread of the coronavirus by shutting down parts of the once-booming American economy.

Goldman Sachs is warning clients that the S&P 500 could bottom at 2,000 by midyear, marking a 41% plunge from the record highs set just a month ago. The Wall Street bank expects stocks to rapidly recover before the end of the year.
